Torque wrench failure.

Think they still are. I got a norbar one from zoro not long ago - it was paid for by work so I got the higher spec one with the little setting window. The Halfords ones are identical to the lower spec norbar ones I was looking at (nothing wrong with them, and if it was my own money that’s what I would have chosen. They are just a little different in how the scale is presented but mechanical specs seem identical)

All my torque wrenches starting at 3/8" and finishing at 1" drive are britool. They go for calibration every year.

i used to do work sometimes at cummins diesel and could have had mine calibrated there as they tested theres every day. dont know any of them now so that ended that

Almost 100% yea but there's now that doubt in my mind that hopefully finding the wrench is fooked will mean I'm in the clear AND I get to buy a new tool

I saw a video recently , looked very easy to re-calibrate change the calibration on most torque wrenches.

wasn't this one but I can't find thew one I watched

I did the same when I worked for JLR.

A bit of an update, I just set the suspect 1/2" wrench to 60Nm and put it in the vice, I could click it off using just one finger.
I put my 3/8" wrench in the vice set to 60Nm and had to lean on it quite hard to make it click!
I was pressing the 1/2" wrenches handle at exactly the same distance from the vice as the smaller wrench so the leverage was the same.
My conclusion is that it's well fooked!
I've ordered one of those cheap torque testers off Ebay so will test them more accurately later in the week.

The suspect Draper 1/2" wrench set for the Fiat 500 wheels at 98Nm!!!
It's massively out



My really old 3/8" Sykes Pickavant wrench set to 60Nm.
I also tested my little Teng 1/4" one and that's very close to spec too I'm happy with that.
New tool time

I went with Snap-on Techangle torque wrenches.

Never had a moment to feel it was at the wrong setting.

Car wheels get "2 grunts" with my long handled 1/2" Snap-on ratchet (basically a breaker bar / ratchet hybrid). Never had one come off or snapped a stud.

It's quite an impressive thing, and it at least proves I didn't forget to do the wheel up!

I stripped down the Draper torque wrench today and found nothing broken but the steel roller and ball bearings were covered in very old thick grease.



I've cleaned it up and rebuilt it with some new grease then tested it on my new tool, after fiddling with the adjustment it's much closer to spec but it does seem to vary 3 to 4 Nm.

Mmm made in China???
