so been stripping the main shaft that connects to the head.


came apart in about 10 seconds .....



but oh my did it take a long time to put back together correctly.....

you are looking at about 2 hours here .



skf bearings came out so skf went back in .......

I went to a local bearing place for bearings last year and they were trying to fob me off with chinese bearings. Not on my watch they weren't

managed to grab an hour before work to finish the vice off. and put the gearbox on the bed....





seller said it opens to 4" , that was only because of all the swarf in it , now it opens up over 6.5"

so this is the way the rest of the machine stands at the moment......

not sure what to tackle next !

im thinking of having this sandblasted as it would be so much easier , cant face chiseling all that paint off


was planning on leaving the internal workings well alone , but the state of them, its really filthy in there ,plus i could change all the bearings on the end of the shafts


you can just about see all those caps that i assume you can draw the shafts through , no idea how though as everything so far has been make it up as i go along , i have no manual!

I'm pretty sure every shaft will have a tapped hole in the end.

Thanks matey , mostly chipped at it with a hammer till it all came off , then just went over it with a flap disk and 80 grit sandpaper to get the small bits off , then washer it all down with the parts washer

I'm pretty sure every shaft will have a tapped hole in the end.

An this is the other end of the shaft , the grub screw comes out the middle but the disk doesnt move at all.

Maybe they're not disks but are the ends of the shafts. Could the over-painting be from a refurb somewhere down the line?
I'd try tapping a shaft with a copper or ali drift to see if there is any movement since they clearly are inserted through the main casting.

I have only just come across this, very good work lots of detailing.
I an envious of anyone who restores machines in such detail, i find i pull them apart clean up rebuild but the painting never gets any farther than red oxide finish. I just want to get it all back together and get it in use.
I take my hat off to you.

After a few cups of t , alot of looking , and headscratching i came up with a plan ....

Slide hammer the disks out and have a look behind ...


Big brass punch and gave the shaft a smack and it moved !


Never sure if you are doing the right thing but after getting it all out and in the right order, you can see its really filthy






All the bearings will be replaced etc
Although i think i will have to remove everything from the inside before it can be cleaned out and repainted ...

Price all the bearings before you remove (and possibly damage) the old ones. If they are an obsolete size you might have difficult finding news ones, and they might be eyewateringly expensive.

I dont think i should have any problems getting bearings as all the ones ive replaced so far have been metric , so easy to get hold of , will look into it though !

i havnt changed many bearings in old machines like that but i wouldnt of thought that finding metric bearings would be common.
happy days tho but as ronan says, id check before just in case.
i have a pair of spindle bearings here that dont look too special out in the open but id set you back £500 odd.

your making a mighty fine job of it so far, it ill look amazing when its done.
you might of said before but what brand and kind of paint are you using on it?

Yeah happy days that they are metric as there are so many available which is good for me , have a feeling all of the bearings on the shafts will be the same 6205 skf bearings

Its really great paint i used it when i rebuilt my super 7 lathe , goes on great and gives a good gloss.

Just because they are metric bearings doesn't necessarily make them cheap, or easy to come by. I made the same assumption with my Thiel. Most of the bearings are fine and relate to current SKF numbers, but I wanted (still want..) to change the spindle bearings. They turn out to be very special one manufacturer only, and whilst still available, the two bearings cost considerably more than I paid for the machine... Needless to say it still has rumbly spindle bearings...

Dont worry they seem to come out of the casting very easily so im not damaging them if that makes sense , ill definitely make sure they are available before i go ahead and remove them completely.

these are all the caps that cover the end of the bearings that go into the casting, 4 cleaned up well but the one on the far right looked like it had been beaten on with a hammer, (sorry no before pics)

problem is you cant really take much off the face of them as they are tapered , so the more you take off the face the looser they get .
so i took a fine file to it and got most of the rash out , and silver soldered the rest, some were very deep , you can just about see them
, then smoothed it off on a stone , came up well!
for some reason it had an allen key grub screw in it , where as the rest have screw driver flat grub screws, so i made one out of some 5/16 bsw threaded rod and cut a slot in the end for a screwdriver blade. now they all match!



here are some other parts ive taken off in the last day or so
the casting on the right is the holder for the driveshaft that moves the bed
the driveshaft is below it





the other caps on the end cover the other ends of the bearing mainshafts.

top left is the clutch, took this off last night .... slightly worried by the massive bearings that are underneth it !
