There is nothing wrong with using the about methods and tools. But using a good Notcher is a revelation
With the tubes being so thin wall what sort of cutter is used ?

Also, I think the bearing squeak is the drive belt slipping. It's just one I found in the shed, so I'm thinking i need to get a proper one...
I dont know who is the best but my friend is well respected in the racing cyclist world. There are a good few still about but there is not the work there once was.
Cutting pipe the old skool way is a perfectly acceptable way of mitring tubes but why not make it quicker/easier with a simple sander. As I mentioned earlier I would prefer a hole saw version as it means changing the size of the cut would be easier.
I've seen a few bike tube notchers who put a hole saw in the lathe and have a custom clamp for the tubes. Instead of having lots of machines just adapt a couple and make custom clamps to hold the work.
Who is you're friend M4RKE? I will probably have heard of him.

Yeah I wanna know too M4rke.
All I have to do to change the size of the notch is change the front roller, the axle slides straight out and a new roller goes right in. Simples.

Bit before my time and while my old man was a time trialist he had quit by then. Many of the names that come to mind are retired men now and besides the name on the frame doesn't always mean that much...
I've lost touch with Ron Cooper (been a few years but he was still building at the time albeit much lower volume), last spoke to Alec Bird a few months ago (used to work with the cantankerous old git when i was a kid), another name that comes to mind is Alan Shorter but i couldn't list all the framebuilders that built for him
Well Hotroder you know a few of the long establish builders and if you dont allready know Alan Shorter passed away just before christmas
You are on the right track with a north london builder anyone else care for a guess ?

Didn't know Alan Shorter had passed on. RIP. This has been bugging me all afternoon but everyone i think of is south of the river, one last guess and i'm not playing anymore! Barry Chick?

I'm not knocking any of the various different methods for tube notching but have to say that (the latest, hardest alloys aside) none of 'em are faster than a hacksaw and file in the right hands. I don't have the right hands but have watched several of the old skool cut/file a daylight tight fit up in less time than it took the the holesaw in the vid. Fixturing time consisted of slipping the tube into a split block of wood, clamping in a vice and marking off the cut with a thumb

Ron and Birdy work the same way, only power tools used are drills and belt sanders. Only proper jig Ron uses is for forks, frames are built free hand with a few very simple/basic fixtures. Birdy preffered a simple jig that registered the head tube and bottom bracket.
