I have a set of tyres that could be re-groved, just wondered if it was a worthwhile investment before I attack them with the angle gringer!

My son has one for doing his truck tyres, but they are marked with regroovable on the side wall, But the machine does work well.

I used to use the smaller self contained unit even that worked well but the blades must be sharp for these things to work well.

Regrooving machines work well, but the number of tyres that get regrooved now has reduced quite a bit.

But the fleets I deal with, tyres either get replaced on age, or they're on tyre leasing contracts, so the supplier will just swap tyres.

One of my customers has something like that and re grooves them.

Doesn’t seem much to it to be fair. Observe markings / minimum depth and stick to original pattern appears to be the main points from what I can gather.

I had one when I worked on forklifts. Only ever used them on solid tyres. Easy enough to use but I would be surprised if modern pneumatics have enough meat on the carcase to be worthwhile doing.

Try the motorcycle racers, they used to cut grooves into slicks to make wets.

few on the bay this is the kind of thing i used to use does take a fair bit of effort to use slow and steady pressure

Work pretty well but good luck on making a nice even pattern that doesn't look like you have been at your tyres with a regroover.
I lent it to a lot of people over the years.

The hot wire ones seems a bit more user friendly

The guy I spoke about earlier ^^ isn’t so good at it but his boy is really good. I think you’ve either got the knack or you don’t.

That type you have usually results in a tyre that looks like it’s been attacked by a demented beaver.

Where I started working while I was at / just left school, we had a tyre lathe. I still have first refusal on it if and when they pack up. Thought it would be handy for something as it’s got a massive swing but a really short bed.

Ive used them in the past ,,, not as easy as it looks , but you can get good results , really good on trailer tires , or back axles , but that was lorry tires ,,
now Id also be telling porkys if I said Id never taken the wear indicators out of the odd back tire on my bikes, shame not to get the last bit out of them ,, [ its usually the sides I wear out first lol]

you will love a tire groover ,,, just go easy with them ,,, they have their limits too.

lorry tires were a slow and smelly job ,,, but its pleasing when done.

My mate has one he races in the supermoto series and cuts his slicks on damp days

He makes it look really easy but I can promise you I gave it a go on an old tyre and it was really hard!

I wouldnt imagine a worn tyre has enough meat for regrooving? Is the carcass that thick before the cords?
Thicker it is, the more heat, so I cant imagine truck tyres being designed for it unless its retreaded...?

Sod cutting bike tyres, hardly anything between the tread and cord. Im quite happy riding some rears until the cords showing but thats different!

Some truck tyres are re grooveable but they’re marked as such on the side wall.

@123hotchef - what are you re grooving out of interest?

A cut slick for racing is fine but agreed there isn’t a lot of meat before the cords
