Tyre Regroovers

We used to put michelin XZY 7.50 x 16 tyres on landrovers and when they were worn up, regroove them and fit on the front axle of 2wd tractors. They made an already rough riding landrover into a proper boneshaker.

Funnily enough 6 of those came with the Sandringham and I've sold two to the local woodyard for his loader tractor.

Tyre shop had a hell of a job removing them (they were surprised given the large sidewall they put up more of a fight than BMW run flats). They then had their second surprise when the found they'd been banded as well.

The hot cutter we used to use was a killer you needed breathing apparatus to use it.

For a lot of companies the downtime to get them recut is just as bad as the downtime to replace 'em - it's not really the material cost it's having the unit not out there running. Only see the smaller places recut them these days that might have a trailer sat in the yard for days anyway.

tires were not doubling in prices every year back then though
often transport companies rent their tires these days , who ever thought that would be a thing.

It’s been a common thing in Germany for donkeys years.

That’s why we get good part worns over here.

Tyre leasing makes sense for a lot of companies.
You pay a fixed fee per mile, and the tyre company deals with everything tyre related.

Biggest customer we had with it, got a monthly early morning tyre check of every vehicle in the yard before they left for the day, and anything below 3mm scheduled for tyre changes over the following evenings. The fee covered everything including roadside repairs and punctures, except excess wear (i..e tyres scrubbed due to geometry issues) and sidewall damage.

Not really they are 4x4 rock crawling tyres running at 30psi for road use

From the MOT manual-

Recut tyres are only permitted on:

• vehicles over 3,050kg ULW
• goods vehicles with an ULW of at least 2,540kg having at least 16 inch (405mm) diameter wheels
• passenger vehicles with an ULW of at least 2,540kg having 8 or more passenger seats

If the tyre leasing covers roadside punctures it’s a no brainier to be honest.

Tyre lease is ok if you are into general haulage and the trucks only ever see tarmac, not so clever for those running tippers or involved in Ag/forestry. The rate of off road tyre damage is way too high, mainly side wall which in most cases renders it as a throw away. Most in this game are using runners, recuts and remoulds.

Yes, I used to be a forklift mechanic and only ever used the re-groover on solids.

I also believe the tyre has to be marked REGROOVABLE. Regrooving a tyre that doesn’t have it will also fail an mot because of it
