Vaillant or Worcester gas boiler for my mum

Valiant tend to start so low you can't tell they are on, then they think about ramping up and eventually just as you've forgotten you put it on the ramp up.

Both valiant and Worcester have issues, as do all manufacturers to some degree, I prefer valiant to worc but I wouldn't want either in my house.

Get which ever has longest warranty.

All boilers fire on maximum and ramp down. It's in the sequence of operation they all have to follow

Errr no they don't I commission prob 40odd a yr I've been informed by our local valiant engineer it can be programmed out but they the ecotec28 predominantly are pre set to start low it's energy efficient apparently, it's also a pain in the **** as they have had huge numbers of ignition problems, I will time one next time.

Here's a random post from 2016 of someone who noticed the same thing, I often get calls saying my boilers not heating.

When I was on the tools I was commissioning one a day on average, what's that, 200+ a year? if you want to talk numbers

I also work closely with manufacturers these days, but much bigger stuff (1MW+)

Anyway, this is the reason I try and stay away from boiler posts. I should know better

I kicked a British gas rep out of my house perhaps 5 years ago after I'd had enough of his BS repertoire.

Anyway, our Vaillant is 22 yrs old IIRC the one before was 26 when we changed it.

Had loads of grief with a Vaillant, couldn't get a new PCB for it. Only eight years old and expected better. Got a Worcester oil boiler in the house now for ten years. No problems with it, but I service it myself.

Rental flat has had a gas Ideal Combi for twelve years. No issues at all, and they have a ten year parts and labour warranty. Would have another in a heartbeat.

Our Worcester Bosch is knocking on 15 years old now, serviced yearly and still going strong.

I kicked a British gas rep out of my house perhaps 5 years ago after I'd had enough of his BS repertoire.

I did similar when I was getting quotes for new central heating, I asked what size radiators would be going in each room, he said "what size do you want?" the other companies doing quotes measured each room and specced the radiators to suit.
We had a Vaillant fitted and it's been fine, serviced each year and now 11 years old.

I very much appreciate all the advice and guidance and didn't want it to leave anyone upset.
The wide experience that we have on this forum unfortunately can sometimes lead to polarised and/or different opinions
Any complex systems will sometimes have issues either in a particular model or sometimes in a particular manufacturing batch so I fully expected a range of opinions

I decided to go with the vaillant, long term will decide if it was a good choice but the 10 year warranty and service contract should mean that mum will be kept cosy

thats funny as ive managed to get parts for a 14+ year old boiler vaillant of coarse

now the only issue i have with vaillant is the water thermostat settings in some cases a higher setting is needed but the eu force it to be preset so it dosnt scald someone at the tap

you can find a higher water setting in other boilers just not vaillant

the boiler we have is also vaillant and thats 14 years old whilst the one above is now older

as goes for boilers they all have there issues some have been due to upgrades within there models and others have been poor boilers in the first place

Valiant have had parts supply issues and for some it's still ongoing, currently it's run out the some mechanical timers they've had an issue with faulty units I've had one on order for 3 weeks now.

Finding with the plate exchanger housing upstand they are starting to either rust or react around the heating o rings and then leaking slightly causing more corrosion, it's a twatfull thing to replace.

Warranty calls aren't that high, they certainly aren't bad boilers, but no where near the quality of vailants of old.

It wasn't a case of no longer available, but didn't have any in stock, and could not say when they could get one. After six weeks I gave up, and bought a replacement.

I think the warranty dodging more of less applies to just about anything you buy, not just boilers.

Until the fitter arrived and said you cannot have the vaillant on a single pipe system so you have to go back to the Worcester with the extra gas pipework and by the way
You will need an extra mains cable running from the boiler to the pump. Which is not an easy route

They have called the quote man back and are trying to sort the mess out

As we accepted their vaillant quote does that mean we don't have to pay for the extra work?

In reality I suspect we will pay anyway just to get it sorted quickly as the whole thing is proving a rollercoaster of pain for Mum

Did they guy who did the quote actually attend the premises ?

If they did, I would say it was down to them, as its either lack of product knowledge, or not doing a proper "survey".

Or is it just the fitter wanting an easy install ? Subbie fitting on a price ?

at the moment your boiler has been condemned

you had the choice unknown to them that you couldnt

so now its 2 choices replumb the whole system to fit the vailiant dual pipes in the end it will be better

or fit a larger gas pipe and ackward wiring to the pump

sorry i dont trust british gas and there condemning as they do push for new boilers to be fitted even when parts can still be obtained for them
