The correct way to put a first pass in vertical to avoid LOF is use the triangle method.
Push up watch the arc burn into the corner, left hold, right hold. Push up, watch arc burn in, down to the left & hold, across to the right & hold.
And repeat.
You can then cap if required with a Z-weave which will get okay penetration on the toes but often misses the root.
I’ll take a quick picture tomorrow of what I personally would be looking for.
Overall I want a slightly convex first pass, leg length probably 6mm, clean defined ripples and low spatter.
