Does practicing V up mig with simple beads on a flat work piece serve any purpose?

It will give you an idea of settings I suppose before gravity makes things go south but tbh the absolute best way to learn is an open root.
Closed joints will always appear to weld cold. It’s dip transfer on thick plate so it’s never really going to blend and flow like an open root will.

That’s a good point, I’ll try some open root next.
I shouldn’t need it as the only thing I’ll be welding with V up is the heavy frame for my CNC and that will all be tight joints (remember these won’t be structural welds but I will need decent fusion).
Now I’ve got a machine that’s capable I should really learn these techniques.

Your technique is as good as mine mate. You can do that no problem. It’s just a case of getting it set right in that sweet spot with nice fusion, but not dripping back over. Get comfortable and a thick left handed mitten will make all the difference. As for skill and technique I don’t see any issues whatsoever.

Very good point re the gloves. I’ve got a couple of pairs of decent tig gloves but my mig guantlets are cheapo carp.
During the last cover weave I did yesterday the little finger on my left hand was burning towards the end.
I came home and started on Amazon to find some decent gloves but didn’t get any further.

Any recommendations on decent welding guantlets guys?

Spend over a tenner and you won’t go far wrong. Just select the correct duty.
So v up work is defo a heavy duty application because your propping the torch right over where you’ve just welded.

I use till man for personal use but at work we use some thing panther gloves they are good gloves open root is slightly a bit more difficult then tee or lap joints

I used to wire a second gauntlet to the back of my left hand gauntlet when I was doin a lot of V up and spray transfer work
