Yes, have since messed about with jets/air ratios and got a nice clean burn (blue), what I cant get is a restart with that particular setting without tinkering with it. What I really wanted was a thermostatic control and flameout function so I could turn my back on it while letting it do its own thing. .

Is that a high stability brick? If not, that may be your problem...I can reduce the air flow simply by putting a brick on the pipe, but the setup is such that it performs better when flat out - ie becomes less stable when restricted with the current design.
A rethink is needed, not just less air.
The one that became the bane of my life on a ship as it was intended to just burn waste oil to dispose of it, was similar, in that it lit on diesel, and the controls were supposed to reduce diesel once ignited and introduce the waste. It was pants. So feed diesel all the time to keep it going.Another possibility that I've considered is having another burner running on an expensive fuel as either an ignition source or a pilot.
For example have a stock kerosene burner supplying a small KW output to stabilise the setup, and then feed in the cheap fuel to massively boost the output.
This kind of thing is outside of the scale that I really want to be at, but if you're going bigger, the cost of running a low output kerosene burner in tandem (as a pilot light if you like) and then controlling the waste oil feed independently may be an option for you.

Bi-monthly update time?

Not heard that excuse beforeA bit of a delay, birds nesting inside it and there is a wasps nest in my steel curing rack. Dont mind bombing the wasps nest if I have to but I wasn't prepared to disturb the birds.

I had a similar situation months ago with a blackbird nest, couldn't figure out why a blackbird kept flying around / out from under the JCB when I was using it. Then i noticed the nest with eggs in the middle of the spool block under the back of the cab.A few years ago they moved into the small timber trailer which was stacked up with sticks, despite desperately needing it couldn't bring myself to move that either.

might have been killed i had an abandoned nest of robin eggs in my garage and wernt disturbed they nest every year in it nature can be horrible sometimesI had a similar situation months ago with a blackbird nest, couldn't figure out why a blackbird kept flying around / out from under the JCB when I was using it. Really really needed the JCB so over the course of four days moved the nest a few feet at a time into some bushes nearby. Blackbird went back to the nest whilst I was moving it and when it was in the bushes. Then about a week later just decided to sod off leaving the eggs.
