Welding cast iron

That's got to be cast steel.

If it was cast iron them welds would have been glass hard and destroyed your inserts.

Maybe that is why it welded okish with the mig then.

id imagine a mill would just sling the whole weld out in a oner if it was cast iron

I used 309 or 312 nickel rods to weld my meddings table & it welded ok but as Brad said the welds were very hard.

I have a peice inside my wood stove that I stick welded with pure nickel rod , its been through hundreds of heat cycles and is still good.

For repairs like this I think you could do a lot worse than epoxy mixed with cast iron or steel powder. Trouble is it wouldn't match very well but apart from aesthetics it would be fine.

My first Meddings table was fixed with epoxy. It sure is MUCH quicker and easier and to be honest, it did not affect the use of the table at all. However, I just like/prefer a 'proper' repair with replacement metal.

My Elliott TV2 mill's table have got quite a few marks which I will have to fill with epoxy. Not worth the risk trying to weld that up as accuracy is pretty important on a mill.

I welded this cast manifold today with nickel rods , , got rid of the box put them in a plastic tube , so can't name them , I milled the face of the manifold to a different angle and welded the mild steel plate on , cold ! No preheat and it turned out quite well , not sure if it will last when it's running though !

I done some using MIG and steel wire, got away with it on a non critical item. chimnea. Problem is that you create ultra high carbon steel which is almost diamond hard.
