I would vee out the cracks on the other side and also braze them. Clean besides the cracks well and braze at least 1/2" wide. I don't think braze will stick to where there is nickel.

Hi Bsmith, thanks. I am planning on doing just that. I'll probably TIG braze it because I haven't tried that yet!

I have been using a GoPro Hero and a Sony camcorder thing both set to 1080P. This series of vids is a test so I can set up positions, iron out audio problems (including Heathrow!) and get my editing back to snuff.

In hindsight, I'm not sure I needed the GoPro, it doesn't have the controls I want and I'm not yet getting the video quality I'm after. Needs to be sharper and punchier imho. I may have to use a separate audio recorder.

Meantime I have been making up various mountings and tripod adapters etc. I made this one to fit a large boom area microphone stand. The bubble level is just to give me a ballpark orientation. With it, I can put the camera anywhere within an 8 foot sphere.

Maybe part of the problem is that you're using a brick from a storage heater. It's a heat sink so is taking heat away from the piece. With a proper firebrick you may find it doesn't cool so rapidly.

No I don't think so. It is no worse than firebrick in that respect, the only difference being it will break down at very high temperatures. I bought a load to line a rocket stove but never got around to it.

I'm going to TIG braze the baffle next time, with plenty of pre heat probably from a little oven and keep it topped up during the process with a propane torch.

I heated my stove plate in the oven ,
then kept it hot with a grill element connected under it..

Well yes but there is a ton of conflicting advice in this thread, everything from weld it hot to weld it cold. I was happy to try nickel welding and if it could be done cold, that would have been a very handy weapon in the arsenal.

While it seems it can be done, my guess is that is rare and highly dependant on the precise nature of the part. I could have brazed it but I have already done that with other projects and for various reasons, am reluctant to fire up my oxy kit.

So I am going to TIG braze it while keeping the part hot. I'll warm it in an oven, braze it and then heat the brazed area to stop it cooling too quickly. Then pop it back in the oven cooling it over an hour or so.
