Welding coins/keys/nuts/bolts - total newbie alert

Welcome by the way,

Basicly welding is to melt the two materials (in this case coins) together. maybe adding additional material to the joint while molten.
Brazing is to meld a filler rod at a lower temperature (below The Coin melting point) that bonds the two together without melting the coins surface. More like glueing.

Have you had a look at the tutorial sections at the top left of the page? The Mig & Tig sections would give you bit of a background.

Xstratrongbint, rocking, I was reading your blurb, and hadn't even noticed your name! Brazing is like adding glue, hot glue. Welding your using an electric arc to melt the two metals together, different process. Look at the arc welding section to start, and look at the advice for beginners, but get in their girl, their is a enormous wealth of advice here. And we're friendly.

Sort your coins out with a magnet, these days most of them stick to it.
I use a mig welder and mild steel wire and they weld a treat, the welds end up looking copper plated. Easy and quite nice to do especially if you like lots of tiny burns.
And not even slightly illegal. I have a letter from the treasury.

The bit about defacing Mrs Queen is a myth.
under section 21 of the currency act as long as you are not melting or breaking them down you are ok. My letter is on Treasury headed paper; I love brandishing on flat cap wearing idiots at exhibitions. It is always some old fool in a flat cap who starts blathering on about it. mr Snooper, do you wear a flat cap?

Wouldn't know tbh. The very few things like that ive welded have usually been with an autogeous tack.

That's what I should do around a former it would be real easy. Tried to talk the Mrs into keeping still and doing a sculpture of her but she ain't going for it one bit

Had the TIG set up so thought I'd have a bash. 1.6 multistrike @ 33A running something daft like 10lpm "just in case". Filler was 1mm 316L as that's what was to hand.

All metals cleaned with acid and boiling de-ionised water to rinse. Washed down with IPA before starting.

2p was awful.


20p was easy and looked very nice with straw golds but discoloured rapidly when cooling.


5p also easy and left some lovely rainbows. Picture doesn't do them justice.


10p also easy but I ran out before the last face.


Other than the copper ones, everything was really easy. A pedal would be a great as it's hard keeping that puddle under control at times. Everything was jigged up on a magnet so the arc all over the place.

Tig welding, really!
Straight out of the pocket and mig them; at least the ones that like magnets.
Probably best using a gas Mig welder.
If you ever get near Swansea I will show you how to do it.
I would have to kill you after though.
