No problem the gas with mig or tig is nice safe non burning gas. Its only the gas in brazing Acetylene or propane that can be a problem. Although you can tig braze.

Saw someone doing similar in Macedonia once - couple of car batteries, jumper lead on each coin and touch them together on the edges. He was damned fast whipping one lead off though, bet he got a few warm fingers before he perfected it

Mig is a speedsters tool that always leaves a little blob.
While it works well for those lovely sculptures of chunks I wouldn't think the little coin spheres would look that good with Mig blobs In between each coin. A tig would make that much tidier imo.

That is a gas less Mig welder Xtra,
With what looks like 4 voltage settings only which is quite course. I honestly cannot imagine it will be very good. I'm afraid £100 doesn't buy a new Mig welder in my view. The best thing you could do is have a look on eBay at the pre owned Clarkes. They ain't a bad unit and tend to priced well. If I was buying a new one a little gys smart Mig would be ideal for it. Not too pricey either at £400.

It's only illegal if you change the value of the coins supposedly, that's why you can get them machines that squash 2p's into tokens etc...
Also you could look at mig brazing, it's not much talked about and is quite expensive but definitely something to consider, I've never tried it myself but have herd that newer cars have this done as the floors are forever getting thinner.

just looked it up and you're right, the law was repealed in 1981. it was one of those laws I knew existed but never had a reason to check it was still valid

I have had a bash at making things like keyrings and insects with nuts, bolts and nails etc while learning to weld. I have used both gas and gasless and have found that for the short burst I use to try and keep the weld small for most of this type of work, there is little difference other than the amount of wire brushing that needs to be done after. While I am using gas at the moment, and greatly prefer it for anything else that is small enough for me to work on in the limited inside space I have, if I went back to that type of thing I would probably switch wire back to flux core to save gas and normal wire, as the flux core is sitting unused.
If you where to use CO2 as a shield gas, that is the same as in fire extinguishers and fizzy drinks, really no safety issues. And for absolutely anything else, including tacking angle iron, I have found gas easier (though I am not going to slate gasless as working a lot outside, it has advantages)

Yes mig sticking the coin together was the easy bit the stem/stalk was the hardest due to getting enough heat in the coin to stick without burning it to dust
