Welding Helmet for an old mans eyesight

Well I had a look, my "ergotech " 5 9 9 13 is quoted 1 1 1 2, and produce the same lack of contour that I see on the pics there

IT is supposed to be a good mask , it is light , fast , I use it where high precision is not necessary or outdoor

I noticed btw that the best speedglass LCD are also 1 1 1 2 , so the transpare,cy may be relatively low in that norm I think

Let us know if you get one of those masks

no EN379 announced (LCD for welding)

NEVER did I think I'd be reading a thread about welding helmets for old men! Now that I am one it's very useful.

I don't feel old at 50 but my eyesight, hearing and general aches say otherwise!

About glasses, I obtained a pair of normal glasses (not progressive) for a vertu low 59€ all included.

The oculus took the paper from the ophtalmologist but I asked to make tests with different corrections, so we changed a bit those ones.
I have now a very detailed view from 300mm, a foot, to 2meters, about 7 feet.

You cannot imagine how comfortable I feel now. Even with the LCD my level détail is perfect.
With the fixed shade I fer like watching the puddle with a microscope

If I knew that "work glasses" where so cheap...

Because the focus is not very short (under 300mm it is not neat) I can use those glasses in the shop or in the streets. And if I want to look closer I can add cheating lenses.

Sorry for late reply, I've been away. Not a Jackson, just an eBay one which cost c £30 iirc. Good big viewing screen though.

The wife wouldn't let me. Lol. Apparently 2 auto darkening welding masks should be more than enough for any man. I strongly disagree.

I saw this one for sale on amazon myself and was curious.

I rarely weld. When I do it's not pretty. Yesterday using the Parkside 140A inverter, Parkside helmet I really struggled to see what I was doing. This was in daylight. I'm shortsighted, about -4 to -5.

In the end I ditched my glasses, got right up close with the work illuminated by a 10W LED work light. I actually ended up holding the rod itself like a pencil to get anywhere. (It got a bit hot through the gloves).

More practice maybe but it still wont help me see.

Daft question, is there a TIG like holder but for arc rods?

I'll be totally honest that I've just been and checked! No film on there so I must have already removed it.

Turn the shade down? Should be able to run small to medium stick rods at shade 9...

I bang on about these all the time, but honestly there's nothing as good a value for money - ESAB Sentinel.
The 1/1/1/2 rating is meaningless, I've welded with the latest Lincoln and 3M helmets and I still prefer the sentinel for the colour and clarity. The shade levels are digitally set, and it's true colour. The screen sits close to your face, still room for cheaters or glasses, and the headband is adjustable in a million ways, in fact it's the comfiest welding helmet on the market - FACT.

It's a million miles away from the cheap helmets discussed here, and you can get one for £100. Money well spent!
