I bang on about these all the time, but honestly there's nothing as good a value for money - ESAB Sentinel.
The 1/1/1/2 rating is meaningless, I've welded with the latest Lincoln and 3M helmets and I still prefer the sentinel for the colour and clarity. The shade levels are digitally set, and it's true colour. The screen sits close to your face, still room for cheaters or glasses, and the headband is adjustable in a million ways, in fact it's the comfiest welding helmet on the market - FACT.

It's a million miles away from the cheap helmets discussed here, and you can get one for £100. Money well spent!

I have done this and make a huge difference, combined with a cheater lens makes even my cheap mask much more user friendly.

agh rats! My apologies. For some reason I had it in my head that I only paid £100 for it. In reality, I paid £180 inc delivery off Ebay.

My point still stands, though. I wouldn't buy any other helmet for that kind of money. Instead, I bought an air-fed version as well, for IIRC £580 from a LWS.

I don't have old-man eyes (yet) but having used loads of different helmets, there are some that are simply better to see the arc with than others.

Is there room for a respirator under the non air fed hood?

Looks like a great helmet but its alot to spend as is. Air fed one way out of budget

There's room for a slimline one, I have worn a carbon filtered P2 under the plain mask. You can always move the helmet out from the headgear to accommodate a bigger mask, it's adjustable that way, but it defeats the object of having the lens close up to your eyes.

My respirator is the eclipse so quite slimline, just with reading mask fits close to face

Definitely seems like the sentinel and viking 3350 both very popular and highly recommended

Optrels get very good reviews too but even more costly
