Welding screens are for protecting your innocent bystanding women and children from the old peripheral arc eye. I believe, (tho I may be wrong) that a welding mask may have some use to the welder... (not sure what tho. I find a pair of reactolites usually does the trick)
Is that from you in particular, from experience, or from the manufacturers?
I'm thinking of getting one if W'equip has any left, and I'd be using it to weld the underneath of my Dolly Sprint, so if that's a no-go, we need to be told!

Yep, as long as it is not looking straight up so blobs of weld will fall onto the mask then you will be fine.

So what's wrong with these Parwelds to stop them from being good overhead? Don't they have a replaceable plastic screen on the front that can be replaced when it gets covered in weld spatter (or possibly blobs of weld in the case of overhead welding)?
Nothing! Just 'professional' welders expecting too much from them! They are a budget mask aimed at budget users. So called 'professionals' have bought them, welding heavy overhead sections & had 500amp molten blobs burning through the shield, & subsequently putting a claim in!

You are quite correct there, the point I was making was that so called 'professionals' (who should be spending 100's on masks) are not, and expecting professional performance from DIY products. All too prevelant in the UK, I don't know about the US??

Years ago we wanted a socket set to use in the workshop. Local manager couldn't sanction it, but bigwigs came up from London, took the supervisors out to lunch and came back with an adjustable spanner! This was a multinational company too.

The tools we use at work cost a fortune, but then most of them are shipped in from Japan. 
One tool we used to use a lot of is a box socket, which fits over a screwdriver bit, and has a 10mm and a 12mm socket on. It's held onto the screwdriver bit by a ball bearing, and wears out quite quickly, being taken on and off 5-600 times a day. It then falls off, slowing you down if you're lucky; hitting you on the back of the head if you're not (the air wrenches are suspended on spring balances). The magnets can also fall out. Lead time? Ninety days. These are metal cylinders, roughly 20mm by 100mm.
You'd think they'd shove some in the hand luggage of the executives that no doubt fly back and forth from the mother country.
