Two separate issues there bud mixed together in one line.

That's the root of the surprise here.

That in one hand ebay announce they are scrapping seller fees as aparant step to keep up with similar auction sites.

But then a few weeks later announce another new "buyer protection" fee which essentially just replaces / re names the seller fees they took away.....

I suspect the likes of eBay have been hammered with fraudulent claims or stolen goods claims . I've never made a successful claim with the post office so only use a carrier like Evri who photograph the delivery and send me an email with picture a few seconds after the delivery . To make proof even more visible I have my name on a plaque inside my large external mailbox and a duplicate plaque inside the lid the large bin locker for even bigger deliveries . So far nothing has gone wrong .
I did have a problem with DHL several years ago with my kit build Prusa printer .
It arrived in a DHL logo'd van , wrapped in yards of " Re - packed by DHL" red & yellow tape . Took photos of it at time of delivery in front of the driver and then many more as I unwrapped it. DHL had only stuck the tine of a forklift truck right through the 2x2x2 foot well packed box ....... totally wrecking the kit .

On calling DHL they said it was packed incorrectly . so had repacked it hence the tape saying it had been repacked .

Rather miffed at such treatment I talked with Joe Pusa himself ( in those early Prusa days ) , sent him the pictures , " I'll email you a returns label for UPS , they will collect it when you tell them .
Once you send it & I get it , I'll check it over & if it's as damaged as you say I'll send you a replacement one straight away by UPS .
Five or so days later UPS delivered me my replacement printer just in time for my 65 th birthday .

eBay went downhill once sellers stopped being able to leave negative feedback for buyers. Shifted everything too far over to the buyers side. I closed a profitable sideline once they did as scammers increased massively

For example if I list an item for sale - do ebay then itemise and tack on their buyer protection amount on top of that? Seems more like a change to the fee structure only!!

And seems less than ideal that ebay want to "lock" funds due to private sellers until an item sold has been delivered. There are all sorts of legitimate reasons why a parcel may be delayed and I think it's unreasonable to hold funds back from a private seller for this. Surely receipt of valid tracking information confirming dispatch would be sufficient.

For the volume of used car parts I have listed ill just keep using it regardless but this will likely put private sellers off if I have understood that correctly.

You list item for x amount, ebay adds onto that the 4%+75p which buyer pays and you get the amount you listed the item for is what I think it means. Even if you the seller pay the fee it's still cheaper than the original 12%+30p before the fees were removed which everyone seems to have forgotten about.

For those worried about ebay holding payment until delivery just use royal mail 48 as cheaper than any other courier and tracked+£150 insurance, recorded the item working etc and then being boxed and taped up to cover your end.

It's the same as it always used to be.

The eBay email specifically says something to the effect of "no surcharge for the buyer, all included in the hammer price".

So, again, it's just a re introduction of seller fees.

Royal Fail 48h is definitely not worth all the hype. Bought and paid for something on EBay on the 16th Dec. Had notification that it would be delivered RF 48h between 9:23 and 1:23 on the 20th Dec. Eventually delivered at 4.55 on the 30th December. First Delivery, no attempts, no missed . Go figure….

They really take their sellers as being fools. Doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out your not on a good business plan if you are not making commission on things sold on your platform. So just be honest, don’t come up with cock and bull stories that it not costing you,as a seller, anything. More Pi$$ed off with them keeping my money and making interest on it until they decide to accept it’s been delivered. Had a similar run in with PayPal last year when they tried that stunt. Sold a lot of stuff to Trinidad following Dads passing. Freight was £650 a pop, and they thought it a good idea to withhold my funds until after delivery. So they thought I would quite happily fork out £650 of my own money and wait three months plus until it eventually cleared before I would graciously accept payment from them. They were wrong. Severe back peddling on their part and now no delays on immediate clearing of funds up to £15k…

I sold every two weeks when offered an 80% discount on sellers' fees. If the full fee was 12% then 80% discount made it 2.4% plus 75p so not really much different. I will continue to sell on eBay as a private seller and declare any business-type sales in my tax return as I already do.

Despite the failings of eBay, it's still infinitely better than Facebook and the knobs and scammers that Marketplace attracts.

Gave up selling on fleabay when they insisted on bank details, I've found Gumtree to be 'OK' for getting rid of random tat, if it doesn't sell on there, it goes in the scrap bin at work. Never considered selling my soul to FB for the 'benefit' of their wild-west sales platform....

Just had an email from them today to tell me they're including extra fees on private sellers' prices, but that's ok because they're included I won't notice them. That's wonderfully thoughtful of them.

Ebid - not as large but slowly growing. I've bought a few vintage photographic items from there, well priced and reliable sellers.
Last year or so I noticed there seemed be more of an uptick in the growth rate, possibly as a result of ebay sellers trying other venues.
Ebid doesn't attract the sheer numbers that ebay does though.
