Currently reworking my POS Chinese Syil X5 CNC mill, to correct all the geometric errors.

After measuring the errors in the assembled machine, I set about removing the cosmetic scraping (that appears to have been done with a hammer and chisel, to hide the angle grinder bodging) and correct most of the error by re-machining the faces, in preparation for final alignment scraping.

I find it pretty interesting that yoy can mill a mill on a mill. This Is how they would make mills, and somehow get better accuracy each time, probably through scraping.

Been meaning to make one of these for long enough.
Needed one last night, to sq a one off collet I’d made last week and taken out the chuck.
so lopped off a lump and hey presto.

63 tooth done, trialled it with a marker first.


Started the 127T, I cast this blank about 2 years ago now. If I muck it up I've got a nice piece of 20mm ally plate I can get another out of...better material too. It's all good practice either way.

127T done, not perfect but very close, I think it moved on the Arbor slightly during a cut. Think I will do it again from the better material. It's noticeably louder than the 100t it replaced and rings quite a bit.


M16 X 2 thread cut to test it out...delighted I can finally cut metric threads. One more thing (mostly) scored off the project list.

Maybe glue a couple of pieces of flattened inner tube rubber to it with contact cement. Or car sound deadener if you have some. Self adhesive flashband possibly.

I was thinking similar, need to see what I can scrounge up.

I wanted to make an adaptor but it needs a 1/2" bsp thread, 14 tpi 55 degree bsw. It seems my lathe can do it, but I only have 60 degree tools, close enough?

May be easier to chop the end off and turn a new end on the core drills.

Just in case you are not aware, 15mm plumbing fittings are 1/2" BSP. So are old wash basin or sink taps.

Last week I got some 40x40mm bar, 2 meters of it. It bandsaw cut ok. Tried milling tonight, the two flame cut faces are glass hard

Dont want to waste my carbide endmills, but I do have an insert endmill. The inserts are no good, not sharp, so thought its worth a try with the cordless grinder.

Now it is sharp, though I think still too far off center to be any good, 12mm really needs smaller inserts!

Quick test cut on aluminium, quite happy, but for a single flute on alu it really needs much higher rpm.

The reground inserts and the holder are a good success, I had been intending to try this for ages! Its just the general purpose inserts are rubbish. I will order a pack of 1135 aluminium ones for it - they have plenty of meat for regrinding.

Tried the softer face of hard stuff with the face mill and normal inserts.

I suspect same thing with these inserts. So swap to mild steel to compare with h01's.

Mild steel front, hard stuff back. Finish on mild is poor, tooo blunt.

Vibration and noise - gone. Cuts like its not even there. 0.8mm deep cut. Video 0 1mm cut

One H01 chipped while I was edge finding, so Ill try that single insert on the hard stuff.

Spent half of today lying under the Landy, starter solenoid not always working, so decided to spend the afternoon standing up by making a little breather cover for My BMW Bevel drive.

The old one's plating has gone , so I painted it and it is now a bit tatty:

So out with a piece of stainless bar for facing:

OD turned:

Drilled then used progressively larger milling cutters up to 3/4":

The part off:

Then a quick file then a polish:

Looks a bit better and will not rust:

And back on the bike:

Pity no test ride:
