I can assure you that you do not need a good sense of smell for identifying Delrin/Acetal by the flame method, the back of your airways will soon inform you

No turning today but just put in a mitutoyo order, some decent offers on at the minute. Would like some metric mics up to 100mm but they’re a lot of money.

Might save for a 0-25 Digital Coolant proof mic, they’re lovely tools.

Also waiting for a reply on a new Noga indicator holder. My old Noga is good but no where near as useful as the articulated types now available.

The Mitutoyo QuantuMikes are the dogs dangly bits, have the 0-25 and 25-50 but the 50-75 is just the standard digital type, still good though.

The QuantuMike are fast acting, move 2mm per rev instead of 0.5mm of a standard Mic. They use an encoder to get the reading.

Also I think the most I paid for mine was not much more than £100, used to be in touch with a guy that was able to source direct and he gave me good prices, sadly he has disappeared off the face of the earth so maybe it wasn't all above board like he assured me it was.

Just looked back, it was Oct 2013 I bought the Mics, paid £85 each for the QuantuMikes and £90 for the 2-3" Digi.
Wish he hadn't vanished, last thing I got from him was a 150mm coolant proof caliper for £65 and that was Dec 2017, wish I was still in touch

One thing to note, if you do get a DigiMike make sure you lock it before you put it away as the slightest vibration switches them on and the batteries don't last as long that way.

Made a start on the double pulley for the lathes new motor so I'm ready when I've got an inverter, bored to size and marked out ready for putting the vee's and the key way tomorrow hopefully.

A little more progress.

First time I have ground or used a form tool.



Which turned out ok especially as it was between centres, a little bit of chatter but some good cuts as well, lots of Rocol RTD was used.

This was the set up which I removed prior to setting the off axis for the taper turning.


Note cut up Pepsi can to hopefully protect the knurl, and the result.



The end which will be threaded got a bit chewed, I could not get a nice angle on the tool and resorted in using an insert tool, I should have ground up a thin HSS bit.

I am getting into HSS now.
More updates to follow when I have got the taper done.

Cheap vice needed to be squared. Facemill is great on cast just need a much bigger one and more travel. I might attempt to make one.

Machine must be 65 years old and still produces finish close to ground

I've got a Fowler digi mic, always seems to read true, but the display constantly flashes which is irritating. Might give it a strip down and see what happens. The fast acting ones sound good!
