What do all you hobby welders wear???

Ordered one of those tanks suits...really horrible fit I thought. So instead got my hands on some 100% cotton (very heavy) military overalls for a tenner & a cotton base layers to go underneath. Overalls a bit restrictive but actually very very good at retarding sparks and hot bits.

Theres a guy on ebay selling Dutch Army overalls for 10.99 inc free Uk postage. Thats what I got and they are a bargain! Just watch out though as chest is a bit snug. For reference size 50 will do 36 chest, 32 waist, and quite a long leg...just rolled mine up...works the very best.

Its a real shame...loads of really cracking work overalls and mechanics overalls but they are all Poly mix which I wouldnt dare risk!

I use what I generaly wear around. Only cotton or wool. When I had several guys working for me on a casual basis in Portugal, the rule was no synthetics. Of course, it was not obvious what some stuff was, so batting out a flaming shirt was not unusual. Do not breath in as you rip it off tends to burn the hairs in your nose.... Nasty smell for some time after.

Much more important: Leg coverings that overlap your footware. I have had a few big bits get in my shoes. Dance training for 'Strickly' + some 3rd degree burns.

Back in Norfolk, welding up trailor axles on a nice sunny day... I got 'sunburn' on my midrift after an afternoon of 'mass production' Arms were OK, but I had my shirt off..Duh!

Only do hobby stuff now, so for mig it's usually cotton t-shirt; cotton ex-German Army shirt. Old, wide, loose-fitting jeans that cover the tops of my safety boots, with an old cotton warehouse coat on top if I'm standing up at the bench, and old heavy-duty cotton boiler suit if I'm underneath anything. Usually wear lightweight leather gloves, even £1-shop type if it's a small thin-metal job.

For arc I put a leather apron on top and usually wear gauntlets. Generally wear a real woolly hat rather than a synthetic one, or a cotton forage cap back to front in warm weather.

Usually take the apron off if I'm going up the shops....

Looking for a cheap welding jacket, I wear jeans and a cotton top but the workshop gets cold enough at times so the jacket is just to keep warm and protect the jumper a bit, I think overalls would be overkill, I think I have an all cotton pair lying around somewhere if I really needed them.
I have a cotton/terylene jacket but a bit dubious about using it due to terylene in it.

Any recommendations?

Last time I did a bit of welding I had a pair of jeans on and a thick pair of cotton overalls. Had a 'blob' burn through both layers and left a lovely burn on my leg. Hurt like a b**ch .

Got to order myself a leather welding apron because i dont wan to experience that again if I can help it

Realistically if its just a plain leather type welding jacket then ebay is probably your best bet, or your local welding shop.

Think I'll be trying ebay again - the sellers I tried before wouldn't ship to Ireland.

Found the price from local welding place....twice the price of other similar jackets.

Bought my jacket from fleabay for £35, the trousers aint grinder proof because I have set myself on fire before with them and the boots are Caterpillar Supremacy boots. My noggin cover is an Optrel Satellite

For me its all cotton,topped off with a flameproof warehouse coat , ( I only weld at a bench ) comfy rig boots, good solid pair of weldas gloves the trusty Speedglas bucket.

Yep, my other half is a teacher and she taught me how to tie laces

Rigger boots are no good when your crawling under plant or hgv trucks in mud, the crud ends up being funneled down ya boots
