What do you take for a cold

Well, I am thoroughly fed up today. I have been absolutely full of cold since Friday and it is really getting me down now, I feel like crap and my nose is like Niagra Falls. So what to do, Blackcurrent lemsips and Fishermans friends are the current tools but starting to make me feel bloody nauseous. Please do not anyone say "hot Rum toddy" or "Hot Whiskey and lemon", apart from the fact alcohol is probably one of the worst things to be drinking when you are ill, I take a fair few prescribed drugs daily that DO NOT mix with alcohol.

Same here recovering.
Went to the hospital on Friday evening because I was way too sick ended up vomiting air.
They prescribed me Brufen I'm not sure if it's available over there

My daughters had some sort of ‘flu’ for weeks now, cough, cold, various aching muscles, severe headaches, coming and going by the day. She saw the GP a week ago, he just told her to take paracetamol, but not ibuprofen.

I’ve had a wierd one since I had covid 2 months ago, only on some nights, sleeping on my right side gives me a real sharp headache on the left side of my scone. If I turn over it soon goes away.

I may as well, got no use for that equipment any more. Probably a 2 years waiting at the gp though…… vets might be cheaper, and quicker…

I take Beechams flu plus but home and bargain sell a Galparm equivalent that works well, Write down the times you take them so you know exactly when the next one is due. Plenty of fluids, Honey and a squirt of lemon for my throat.
I have found different brands have slightly different ingredients and work for some people and not as well on others.
I used to take Ibuprofen in-between doses as this and paracetamol work differently but it all depends if your current medication allows this.

Sorry you feel like crap, all you can do is continue with whatever cold remedies you're taking, keep warm , fluid intake maintained or increased, I like to sup on a mug of Marmite or Bovril.

Perhaps an interesting fact might cheer you up, there is very little medication you can't mix with alcohol.

Nothing available over the counter will work, with the exception of Sudafed for clearing your nose (Please don't have a go at me, several Pharmacist's have said exactly that, I am merely passing it on)

Nothing over the counter will work in the sense of killing the virus causing the ailment, BUT the remedies available from your high street or supermarket WILL ease the symptoms - and it's the symptoms that leave you feeling like ***** not the actual virus, if that makes sense!

IIRC the common cold unit at Porton Down closed after 50 or more years without a solution medication being discovered for the common cold .
I often think that state of mind is a major factor in kicking a common cold for a lot of people , the more you get depressed with it the worse its effect seem to be .

Though I confess since the first & subsequent anti Covid( after the event for me & my lass) & annual essential worker then as an at risk person later in life for anti flu injections & boosters I've not had much more that a snotty nose for a few days. in years .

All that effort wasted spraying commuters on the underground and the Unit had nothing to show for it.

As for the annual anti flu injection, I want to step a little careful here as many swear having them works.

I stopped having AF, years ago, I don't care what they say--I don't care-- when told it being a dead virus or part of, everytime I had one I went down with a rotten cold.

I had to go to the medical walk in center last friday night as i have had a cough and flu like symptoms for 5 weeks now, it has now got into my sinus so out i came with a 5 day course of antibiotic...the sinus mucus seems to be lifting but this cough which brings nothing up to the throat and i cant seem to shift it is still hanging about. Recently had all kind of xrays and MRI so i can discount more serious lung conditions hopefully, but has anyone noticed a simple cough or cold seems to hang about for an eternity these days.

Ginger shots and tumeric shots plus keep drinking water for me.

Yes, two of my kids have had theirs for 4-5weeks, nothing serious, just lingering stifles and coughs.

I have to wonder if lingering cold symptoms are down to lack of natural sunlight and poor natural vitamin intake?

Had the same a while ago doctor, said it was a virus going around an inhaler spray for my breathing and a short course of anti-bacs, it'll go just get on with it.. charmining.

'Tis the season for colds. A good blast outdoors on the pushbike, whenever I had the start of a cold, seemed to help shift it. Going out for a run would have a similar effect. Not sure I'd recommend it if you feel really poorly with it, though.

Another possible remedy is inhaling menthol vapour. A decent chemist shop should stock menthol crystals. One small jar will literally last a lifetime. A few of the crystals in a bowl of hot water, and a cloth over the head, or cupping hands to make a sort of face mask, over a mug of hot water with the menthol crystals in it, as the method of administration. Menthol acts as an expectorant, and may help the removal of mucus from the airways, clearing virus particles with it.

One of the problems with finding a cure for the common cold is the sheer number of different viral strains implicated in its cause. It's thought that there are over 200 virus strains able to cause common cold. Some of these viruses don't replicate well at body temperature. The surfaces of the air passageways in the body are normally cooler than 37 degC, and this allows the virus to replicate. Staying in the warm, and keeping the neck and upper body warm, and breathing warm air, can therefore help in some cases. This seemingly contradicts the "going out on the pushbike remedy." However, when exercising on the pushbike outdoors, the mucous membranes of the airways become much colder, possibly too cold for the virus to replicate. On top of this, there is increased mucus production, which may actually help to clear the virus out of the airways.

Vitamin C has been mentioned as being helpful in preventing and treating the common cold, but there doesn't seem to be any real evidence in favour of this. Even the Linus Pauling Institute (for it was Linus Pauling who frst proposed the idea of taking Vitamin C in relation to colds) don't support the idea of any real benefit. However, having a poor diet won't help, so look after yourself and try and eat healthily.
