What rod to use on 100x100x10 box section

Have u ever pulled a shakerator? I presume you're using McConnell legs or copys... We had a 3m one with 7 legs and it put out Fendt 718 on its **** propery and that was on ploughed land. A 6m machine needs to built like a battle ship and yours isn't... Please go and look at www.sumo1.com and see how massive a 6m subsoiler needs to be.... They should be trailed and need a 400hp crawler to pull....they are MASSIVE.

The best thing to do would be to cut it down to 4m and MASSIVELY reinforce it and it "might" work. Sorry again if I seem harsh but it won't work in its current form.

i really dont know much about tractor type equipment but i do know about structures and i would be inclined to agree with the above post.
at the very least there should be some 45degree lacing sections welded between the two 100x100x10SHS 'wings'.
the torque on the wings will be massive and this will try to pull your wings down into the ground and they will buckle.
All i could suggest is to add a third length of 100SHS in the middle of the two you already have and 500mm or so above them and also add lacings to the two sections of SHS you already have. this is difficult to fabricate but adding two more lengths of SHS above the two already there and again add 45degree lacings between all sections would be alot stronger.
make the lacings from 70x70x5 SHS should be more than sufficient and be easier to weld.
i really hope this project works and you can prove us wrong, after spending lots of time and money please ensure that it is over designed or you will be gutted to watch it buckle on its first outings.

Hi -C-P-, I haven't been on this site that often lately but I just came across this thread, and unfortunately I would also agree with the two posters above, now to clarify , I am not and engineer but have been around machinery most of my life so take this for what it's worth.

I hope that you can prove me wrong but I also do not think that design of yours will work, whilst 10mm x 100mm x 100mm SHS is strong, the leverage on the corners will be much stronger and I think that the ends will bend in to a banana shape, both horizontally as well as vertically. Where the tynes are, I would put the cross bracing as near the tynes as possible as when they dig in to the ground the tynes will want to twist the SHS off in a circular motion as in the smaller sketch on the right.

Personally if I was going to finish this off and as you have almost completed this I would be adding some more reinforcing to your design at the back and across the frame. Some strong gussets in the corners would also not go astray. This is just a quick sketch on my part without any engineering calculations involved or indepth thinking about it, but it might give you some ideas. There are other ways this could be done better but this is just a simple sketch. This is just my two cents worth and as others has said, I hope that you can prove us wrong but I really don't like the design as it is, if that is all you intend to do with it.

Sorry I don't think I made my post very clear, I did say that I hadn't progressed alot meaning I havn't finished in fact there is alot more to go on my post was more about stating that I had killed my welder and am looking for a replacement but don't know what to get to replace an oxford.
I spoke to someone that shoots on our land and happens to be a welder by trade on building sites, and he is asking people he knows about another oil cooled welder.

Before bracing it I was going to put the hydraulic rams on so then I can see where I can add my bracing from the 1st beam to the second. Between the two beams, on each side I was going to add 3 pieces of 200x25 plate. But since reading the last two comments maybe I will do 45 degree bracing not sure yet.

morph did you mean the fendt struggled to pull the subsoiler or it broke it, with 180hp both sound very unlikly. I have used a 3m 5 leg Discaerator (on demo) with a MF 8220 155 hp and it was happy to pull it at 9 mph, and morph don't worry it could be worst, it could be your money. If it does break after 20' in the ground. i'll fix it so it will last 40' next time.

glad it worked in the end and hope it works for many years, to be fair you did'nt (as far as i can recall) give us the full info as i did'nt realised there would be a roller piece behind preventing alot of the torque from doing its worst.

Looks like a good build CP.

As you said, it looks like from the video, that its sitting a little nose down, which i usually find is actually a good thing in most cultivation and sub soil practices.

Im glad it worked out for you, and hopefully going down 12" is enough for you and your land. Up here in scotland we usually go 18" as a kinda minimum, but dont have any tractors on the farm fit to pull anything past 3m with 3 legs at that depth. (160hp) We just bought a new Kevernland 3 leg CLE, its a fair bit of kit, but i can imagine wasnt cheap!!

What legs did you use on your build? do they have wings/frogs etc? do you have any breakback protection at all? shearbolt, spring, or ram etc?

We had two old 2.5m 3 leg subsoilers, which were MF frames with ransome legs, but with no protection the legs just twisted over the years, and even with them straightened in a press, they were never the same, hence the new subsoiler was bought!!!

Would be real nice to see some pics of the frame, legs and welds etc up close (because im nosey!!!)
