I made a crystal radio set as a kid, the longer the antenna the better the reception so I ended up with about 70 or 80ft of wire running from my bedroom down to the bottom of the garden, I remember thinking it was amazing that it worked without needing a battery,

Back in the mid 70's we used to go to Leigh tip on Two tree island, Carrearas Rothman had a huge cigarette factory in Basildon & used to dump all the reject fags there, some were all filter. some were all tobacco. We used to sell them at school. We used to shoot rats there. One day we found a pile of 5 gallon drums full of waste thinners. Of course one got set on fire, the rest rapidly brewed up & we ran like rabbits. within ten minutes the fire was collosal & we heard the fire engines sirens coming. To our amazement we were not caught but the fire burnt under the tip for three weeks.

Twas a seven bedroom Victorian house with detached stable block and grooms quarters above, it was hanging and the old man gave £1500 for it. That was not even a bargain at the time because it had been on the market for years, upside was I had a workshop of my own from a very early age and dad who was ex REME lost all his tools

hmm what can i remember from the listYou'll be forcing me to relive my vintage computer memoriesFrom ZX81 to Cromemco S100 machines, TRS-80 to the VIC-20.
Off computers for a sec, I remember:
- There were three TV channels
- You had to adjust a potentiometer for each "preset" on the TV to select the channel
- One of our TVs just had a pot and you had to rotate it to find the channel (and it was black and white)
- RCA record player with a tall multi-LP selector that dropped the next disk down one at a time...
- ...sometimes, except when it dropped two or three at a time...
- ...or dropped a record prematurely right on top of the tonearm
- My mum's Fiat 126, in green
- My dad's Austin 3L, in blue
- My Raleigh Grifter (and wishing my parents had bought me a Chopper instead) and...
- ...the joys of the Sturmey Archer 3 speed hub gear, which was supposed to have three gears but typically had two and a random neutral that would kick in despite the piano tuning of the tiny chain adjuster

10. I lost the use of any gears after the first week when the chain snapped (these things seem to happen when your sliding along the floor with a car coming towards you)

you should think about carrying some ID next time you go to one of them jobsits not so bad living in a home and your away with the fairies . its when u have all your marbles and a full deck but cant walk or manage and have to listen to it with no decent conversation to stimulate your mind

I remember the Army surplus/second hand shop in Thornaby in the early sixties, Great place, Was it actually called Aladins cave? Used to go there with my brother when I was a teenager, I remember the guy that owned it saying he bought big crates at army surplus auction not knowing what was inside, You just don't find places like that any more,

Anyone been in Bogie Knights in Plymouth, talk about an Aladins cave. I haven't been in there for about 25 years but I think it's still there. Not sure what the real name is, but that was what it was always known as.

We were in there once, Box just been opened contained, Thousands of rifle bolts, Each one wrapped in multiple layers of protective waxed paper, grease and Denso type tape, Another big crate had a Land rover type flat-pack trailer in it.

Just after I started spraying cars I bought a surplus US army compressor pump, a Kellog twin stage pump with a centrifugal unloader, it came in the army crate
and cost me a fiver. The bloke had hundreds of them.
A bloke who lived in the next road to me was given a phone number of someone down near the sea side who had harley parts; I gave him a lift down
there. We ended up in a yard that had some tanks and army trucks in it. We went to a big shed that looked like it was packed with random ****.
The bloke opens things and they are full Harley parts, I think it was a wardrobe he opened and it's stuffed full of Harley rod sets in brown paper, which is
what we went down there for.
