Why does my compressor weight so much.......?

Because the plonker I bought it from didn't drain the water out of it.
150 litre sip compressor, HALF FULL of water!
It's still draining out now and it's been going half an hour already!
No wonder we struggled to move it into my van.
Some people truly are a waste of space....

Like I said I've just picked it up
I haven't tried it yet "because it was blowing fuses"
I've found one split in the live supply cable so far......
I think it was used on a B type mcb so hopefully it'll be fine.

Unusual for a compressor to squeeze that much water out of the air. Most likely was sitting outside drinking rainwater on the inlet. Best check the compressor itself and of course the air filter.

I don't thinks it's ever seen rain, it's like new not a mark on it! I think it was just used and not emptied by someone that didn't know better.
Even the oll is clean.
I hope there's no way for water to get back into the cylinders if it's been tipped up though.

I have to wonder then if the seller actually did try to use it as a jet wash...

Well I've plugged it in and it pops the 13 amp fuse in the plug, balls!

I've tried it with both capacitors unplugged and it still pops the fuse.
It has no short to earth.
So how do I test a single phase motor and the capacitors?

Sounds like the motor's cooked - can you get it apart or peer in through an end-cap and see if the windings look burned?

I think the fuse will always blow with the capacitors not connected

Surely the plonker was the guy who didn't check to see if it worked before buying. The waste of space still managed to part the money from the fool tho

I did have something useful to say but you didn't understand. The fact that you were so derogatory about the seller, calling someone a waste of space as they didn't drain a compressor when your non to smart.

I don't go around on forums calling people "fools and non to smart"

I got a big almost new compressor for not a lot of money that I'm happy with.
I bought it as "not working" So I wasn't " parted from my money"
By the way there was nothing in your post that was actually useful to me or anybody else for that matter.

Anyway I'm after some useful information on testing a motor if anybody knows something that might help.

First do the easy test - is it seized; like Screwdriver says, can you turn it by hand?

If you can then try isolating the motor by disconnecting all pulleys etc and wire a fresh supply to the motor and see if you can get it to spin. As tiggy mentioned, is it a 3hp motor or more? You obviously know your beans as you mention a B curve, so it could drawing too much from a 13A supply (I'm assuming that's what you're testing with )

If the motor won't spin then you need to check if its windings are shot and if not then brushes would be next port of call.

Compressors ain't my area but that's where I would start Good luck and report the findings back.

Thanks for the reply, it's a 3 hp motor and it all turns freely, I'll strip it down a bit further tonight and get my megger on it but I think the windings could be shot though :'(
It's got a factory fitted 13a plug on it so shouldn't pop the fuse unless there's a fault.
I'll report back later.

Once you've tried the obvious stuff then have a sniff (seriously) of the motor itself - if the windings are cooked there's quite a distinct smell. Taking the motor apart to check it is fairly straightforward, take it slowly and be careful with the plastic fan - they are easy to break (ask me how I know!)
