Electric are faster, lighter and cheaper. I have yet to see a 12 or 24volt winch rated for continuous use.I've done very little winching so this is a genuine question... if hydraulic winches are a viable option, how come all the Ultra4 racers, which is a serious off road race class, all use electric winches as far as I can see?

if u have dynema u can run it under the vechile through a pipe and winch backwards tooI agree wholeheartedly! I don't have a powered winch anymore, as you said, more often needed on the back, so I now have a Tirfor I chuck in the back and if I don't have that, a high-lift jack and chain!

I used to love it when they turned up for a new motor and once I wired it correctly it ran, two wires and three terminals just throws them
For most of the off road community they see having a winch as their top priority whereas I would prefer to spend the money on stuff so you as less likely to get stuck in the first place
If you want a serious competition winch, look at the twin motor models
6.8HP each how many batteries do you need for that
One of the Ultra 4 UK competitors whose name evades me went to America for 1 of their events and on 1 event they couldn't believe how fast he was winching, left them all for dust. Will have to look up the article cos they logged his winching speed and pretty sure it was into double figures
Pretty sure that was a double motor jobbie as well
