Winch suggestions.

Yes but you know how covers deteriorate, fall off, and sealing rubber washers crack and dry out.
If the connector was on the bottom installing up, would be much better.
It doesn't cost anything for the manuf to change the orientation.

Don’t know about the Ninja winches but my Warne must be really well sealed up. It’s in the elements every day, some days it’s submerged in water and never appears to take any hurt from it.

Because it's well engineered.
Most stuff is coming from Overseas, and a simple o-ring or gasket is awfully hard to get right it seems....

Now you're talking quality, I had a Warn M8000 for 10+ years, used it in all weathers and the only thing I had to replace was the cable when the original got too worn for safe use.

I had a capstan winch on the front of my Series 2. It was 10 years older than god but just kept on doing its thing with no fuss.

Fantastic fine control with a capstan, just depends how much tension you hold on the "dead" end

I sometimes crewed for a mate in his capstan equipped S3, this is him cross-axled in Eastnor park and being a mate I had to get a pic before pulling him out

On the list of stuff I shouldn't have sold, this would be near the top. A '59 Series 2, and a genuine station wagon to boot. Worth about ten times what I sold it for now.

We got to go and 'play' at Eastnor quite often when I was at Gaydon. It was good but the off road demo track at Gaydon was a real eye opener to the capabilities of a 4x4.

The closest I've been to that was a guided tour in an LDV minibus of all things so just saw some of it from a distance, the memorable bit was the driver been handed a radio at the entrance and been told about the "panic button" on the top "what, this one" he said as he pressed it, cue site fire and ambulance turning out

The cheapie winches aren't bad for what they are.

Fitted a vevor 13500lb one to the front of my hlux and managed to put it through its paces pulling a mates shogun up a decent incline after Getting hitched on his towbar and lifting the rear wheels off the floor.

Great until someone crosses the lines on the capstan, or loses a finger or 3. Makes me shudder when I see them on a motor belonging to someone who couldn’t follow instructions to make cereal

If you need a longer pull make or buy an extension rope, I used to carry a 30m extension when doing rally recovery, came in handy a couple of times.

This car was about 150 feet down when we started.

Don't know who made them but they were genuine Land Rover accessories and came in a wooden box with LR logo on, sold them years ago.

Look like fairey anchors. Been thinking about making a set for mine

There is a bit more to the geometry of ground anchors than meets the eye, a winch needs to be pulling through the anchors into the ground as opposed to pulling/tipping the winch base over them.A bit more on this when I am not p155ed.

The fairey ones are more chocks/spades than anchors. For anchors I prefer the pin and plate military ones

As @Tinbasherdan says they are more chocks than anchors, they pivot around the bottom bar under the centre of the wheel forcing the front "blade" into the ground. In the photo I had an anchor line from my rear hitch to a tree behind me. At one point I was being used as a ground anchor for my mates 12,000lb winch next to me and it started to flatten my front tyres against the chocks!.
Probably my most memorable recovery as the slope was covered in stumps so we had to jack and pack the car over the stumps, took us about 4 hours to get the car up.

The photo showing them stood up against the tyre would give you an overall length. The side view looks very close to a 30, 60, 90 triangle.

Maybe someone could estimate a measurement for us - standard LR rim diameter plus sidewall height of the specific tyre shown.

If I can find it I’ve a pic somewhere of my motor roped to 4 others on sheet I’ve as I tried to winch a mates truck back, he slid into a rock and bent the steering bar near double
