Windows 11 :(

This is Microsoft"s way of letting you know why you should stick to an officially eligible PC on its latest version of Windows, and the company"s official stance is that you get a new PC if yours is too old.

Recently, the company also clarified its current position regarding the system requirements of Windows 11 on unsupported hardware after explaining how TPM 2.0 is a non-negotiable standard on its OS.

ive been looking myself and im going elsewhere

i dont like 8.1 as i hated tabbed version straight away
certainly dont like windows 10 ive ripped it out of 2 pcs as got sick of microsoft changing the windows 7 back to windows 10 view on updates
as goes for windows 11 microsoft can stick it as my pc are below there bar for windows 11

im not going to buy another pc just to suit microsoft wishes for installing windows 11 more so when i dont like it and i certainly dont like windows controling it either

windows 10 can be support extended but you will have to pay for an extra 4 years or less as it doubles each year and yet you still dont control it

heres what ive been taking an interest within

if you want to have a look at zorin core or mint

i didnt want zorin pro to much like tablet mode yet again
zorin core iso size 3.18gb
mint iso size 2.70gb

oh and windows 7 is still fine if your willing to take the risk but will still work in offline mode

my opinion is strong on this

if i wanted my pc to look like a tablet id go out and buy a tablet its also the same with the phone

i hate tablet mode with a vengence and i hate tiles as thats within tablets

is a ... pc not a tablet

You can change 11 to be just like 10 i thought i'd hate it at first but once you get used to it just menu's in stupid places

im running on 12 year old stuff and it runs fine

that bypass has been blocked and if your running an unsupported updated pc you wont get any more updates as microsoft intends to block those for further updates upon them as you dont match the critera for further updates

as goes for what you say im still running windows 7 and its been perfectly fine even for the sites i visit for those that say your unprotected but i do have a firewall and antivirus program

but i can still run xp or other distros whenever i want to do as the old programs are still out there

so whats made me look into another operating system simple i still want to run the programs that i run now without the junk and certainly not the operating system of windows 10/11

you can still do the yearly updates by downloading the latest ISO and running setup with a /product server switch if they do block the incremental ones

there will always be a way around issues

Even if they still block updates Win11 is more secure than 10 will be soon without any security patches

Ultimately if someone wants to hack your PC they will find a way , Ive worked with guys who do that for a living to test companies firewalls and network security they make it look easy

11 isnt great and I agree 7 was probably one of the best OS they did but even if I get a few years out of it for free id rather get used to it now than when I cant be bothered modding stuff to get it to work

I have a few laptops with Unbuntu and for just browsing it works great with Firewall and antivirus available too

Exactly.
Microsoft make a half-assed attempt to stop people getting Windows for nothing but they're as happy for most computers to be running Windows that it's an effective bureaucratic blind-eye.

As someone who makes their living from all things IT, Windows 11 or MacOs are the clear choice for a laptop or desktop. There's no non-masochistic reason to run Linux, Windows 7, or anything else for day to day use. Other opinions are available but that's mine.

Well, not really. Anyone can install a Windows 10 or 11 install on a new device and not activate it. It will continue to receive security updates and the (current) restrictions are 1) a warning in the bottom right of the screen and 2) the inability to customise the desktop.

The older hardware I have runs linux better than windows, I have a linux install for my back up pc, file sharing and remote desktop works as it should from my win 10 laptop, the setup would leave the masochists unsatisfied nowadays. Laptop power management can be an issue with Linux, I wouldn't recommend it for someone that doesn't like shutting their laptop down, like me, I just want to shut the lid, open it up a day later and it still be at about the same state of charge.

If you want the newest OS then you should probably have some pretty modern hardware to run it on. By the way, windows 11 is great.

I've just, for purely masochistic reasons, installed Linux on a Surface Pro

As a former hardcore Linux user I enjoyed the process and have given a new lease of life to an otherwise end of life device

However the endless dumbing down/windowsifcation of Linux means some tasks that should have simple were unnecessary difficult, accessing the Grub menu to choose the new kernel for example

Will it be replacing my laptop for daily use though? Well as someone who's day usually starts with MS Project followed by obscure software that runs on Access it's not going to happen

I don't see what the problem is.

My son runs some repurposed server hardware, basically the Chinese removed chipsets and put them on new motherboards. They are cheap and the chips are less than 8 years old, but do not have TPM 2.0.

It does run Win 11 without issue though

I'm going linux, been using linux as a secondary OS for years anyway so it's not a problem for me. Win 11 with it's bloat and AI nonsense pushed me over.

I don't see what the problem is.

The problem for me is I want to use my computers on a dad to day basis like Skotl mentions.
But don't need ballistic speeds or even increased speed for mega bucks.

My route of upgrade was for years a new mobo CPU and ram package from the computer fairs. (Or skan computers) I don't know if computers fairs exist now. Lol used to be wolverhampton race course and NEC museum.

but theres a but as soon as windows updates your pc your back to square one where it needs to be reinstatled yet again

I'm all for reusing parts, mine only get disposed of when they are broken or really past any use. I have a GPU rig I offload Photoshop workloads to. Yes it would be more efficient to just have a newer GPU in a pc, but this way I can do complex transforms from my laptop

ive never liked tabbed mode as i tend to prefer a clean screen, the first that was seen was within windows 8.1 and with windows 10 and 11 of further use of tablet mode

for some reason they want the pcs to look like a tablet which they are not

tablet mode is further rammed down your throat with firefox and opera, firefox has been forced back off tabbed mode



i dont have that view as i removed it with an addon on firefox

if i wanted tablet view then id go out and buy a tablet, now i have one and ive seen others they are a throwaway item and only good enough for viewing the net whilst a laptop is better than a tablet

i dont mind the programs held within a list or for some users to use desktop screen shortcuts and yes i do use them that way ( only my main use programs are on the dekstop )
a list of programs dosnt use much memory but the tablet mode does
