Windows 11 :(

its a fair question

ive never liked tabbed mode as i tend to prefer a clean screen, the first that was seen was within windows 8.1 and with windows 10 and 11 of further use of tablet mode

for some reason they want the pcs to look like a tablet which they are not

tablet mode is further rammed down your throat with firefox and opera, firefox has been forced back off tabbed mode

if i wanted tablet view then id go out and buy a tablet, now i have one and ive seen others they are a throwaway item and only good enough for viewing the net whilst a laptop is better than a tablet

i dont mind the programs held within a list or for some users to use desktop screen shortcuts and yes i do use them that way ( only my main use programs are on the dekstop )
a list of programs dosnt use much memory but the tablet mode does

i dont have that view as i removed it with an addon on firefox

I was on 11 for everything except work, then we had the upgrade which included New Outlook

I no longer work there but my business laptop is 11, I do not like New Outlook but my office package is LTSC so I can keep original outlook for now at least

I never used 8 and using 10 on a Surface Pro felt clunky, definitely not a tablet os in my opinion

its quoted windows 10 on the webpage it was taken from as screen grabbed the view

i didnt like xp as i was an Me user but got to like it

winborg xp was free but introduced loads of programs that was great

then it was vista that everyone refused the operating system more so when people had to buy it

i bought windows x64 then microsoft ended its support as released windows 7

windows 7 ( winborg ) all junk stripped out

now linux i do use alot as its been used with recovery software where microsoft failed upon

you will find many a free recovery programs that way

That's windows 10 with search bar, taskview, cortana, notification centre, one drive running and a start menu full of rubbish, all of which is a choice. Mine is much cleaner and the best experience I have had with windows for a long time, I use this, https://christitus.com/winutil-install/ I'll be holding on till the end before switching to Win11.

But why? Windows 7 was ok from what I remember but not so awesome I want to make 10/11 look like it

I can't explain technically why I liked windows 7 better than 10 or 11 but it was being used to the menu for so long.
Everything in a familiar place. My main gripe was getting to the "My computer" now I know I can click the folders icon on the task bar and go to My PC and all the drives I have in the PC, I am less upset.
I also found Control panel in windows 7 clearer than 10 or 11.

I don't know what stops others using Linux as a day to day thing. I run Mint the desktop and the laptop and have been using different variants of Linux for about 20 years. I started as I bought a desktop with XP preinstalled, the HDD failed and I refused to buy another copy of the OS I'd already paid for. The only thing I can't do on it that I'd like to is run my Bambu printer, that gets run by an old Macbook.

That said it is only an OS, nothing to get all tribal about. It suits me and that's as much as I need

The problem for me is I want to use my computers on a dad to day basis like Skotl mentions.
But don't need ballistic speeds or even increased speed for mega bucks.

My route of upgrade was for years a new mobo CPU and ram package from the computer fairs. (Or skan computers) I don't know if computers fairs exist now. Lol used to be wolverhampton race course and NEC museum.

To me this is no issue at all. We all have these problems with upgrades. Do you want an M.2 ssd? You need a new mobo. New mobo? You need some new ram also, as the old ram isn't compatible. New processor? Sorry its a new socket that needs a new mobo.

Its not a problem, it's a feature of upgrading stuff when unfortunately sometimes backwards compatibility isn't achievable.

The mobo I am running was a second hand one from @PhillipM I remember correctly.
As long as any new board will run my GPU I won't get too upset. As you say I will be sticking with win 10 for As long as possible.

I was a hardcore Linux user for many years, Slackware and Gentoo mostly but I tried others

These days I need some specific software that doesn't have any usable equivalent under Linux

for me its been down to alot of windows programs and games that wouldnt play well with linux thats kept me away from that system

nowadays they have caught up rather well and steams offering of the linux for games has pushed this even further for a gaming system

but nowadays as illustrated with the second post on this thread its also possible to have a windows type looking as close to windows 7 that is more a viable option

for me now and its become the shift for me the programs i use is not going to be supported but they are just by swapping operating systems to linux and i still get to use them without installing an operating system that i dont like

It's all still there just a bit of a faff to get to it until you know how, win10 is 8 years old and win7 has been EOL for 5 years now, we have had time to learn, IMO it's only mildly annoying compared to win7 once it's debloated. Win+r then powercfg.cpl or whichever you need, there are lists online, I remember that one because updates used to change it and I always wanted highest performance. Win shortcuts are useful to learn, Win+e will open This PC, the windows 10 version of my computer, the computer tab will have one of the many ways to get to some of the old win7 style settings too.

I work for a very large IT service provider and many companies dont want to upgrade to 11 so there will always be support for those who wish to pay for it , in fact some very large companies we have not long finished upgrading to windows 10 anyway !

for me and ukracer it will be cheaper to get hold of a newer pc the closer it gets to the end of service life for windows 10 machines that cant be upgraded

and they will be loads of newish pcs that cannot upgrade to windows 11

and that will floor the pc second hand market and right

any pc below the required windows 11 install wont be worth hardly anything

as goes for companies they will have to buy yet again or pay for the years of extra service before they upgrade yet again

otherwise all there pc machines will yet again flood an already saturated pc second hand market as loads try and get rid of older machines

This PC, https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/356380408852 is £115 including delivery and has TPM 2.0, if anyone is thinking of buying one do check specs for yourself incase I am mistaken. If you get 4 years use out of it, which will make it 10 years old by then, that's 50p a week. I have a 10 year old 4th gen I5, it's fine in windows 10 but showing it's age so it's fair to assume it's 8th gen equivalent would manage the same.

your probably more used to the god mode that was had with windows 7 unless you had the home version

for me further against windows 10 i didnt like the spamware installed on peoples pcs to update to windows 10

now thats not a critical system update thats spamware and even forced to install windows 10

theyve also done it again spamware in an update file that has been included with the system critical updates from 10 to 11 update

as goes for the telemetry update that games tried to force upon its windows 7 users and yes steam is one of them

you dont need telementry on an operating system just to play a game toi be installed upon your operating system because its installed with windows 10 it was forced upon windows 7 and 8 users

also a dirty update tactic via a kb file that has nothing to do with your systems protection

Although I'm not a Windoze fan, I do use it for work and a few other apps that dont work well under emulators or in VMs.

I'm messing about with CCTV and AI processors at the moment and needed a relatively decent Windoze PC that could take an M2 2280 format Google Coral AI processor so I could compare Blue Iris and Open.AI versus Linux and Frigate.

I got an AMD Ryzen 7 5800U Mini PC with Windows 11 Pro 32GB DDR4 1TB SSD for £339 on Black Friday from Amazon. It's back up to £449 at the moment but will probably be back down in the new year's sales.

It's got a half decent built in Radeon GPU, enough to drive 3 screens, and being a mobile CPU, it's only 15W TPU. Although the spec doesn't show it, it has a spare m2 NVME slot. Also has twin Ethernet ports and WiFi.

So far its been pretty good, relatively quiet, it's not fanless but it's a decent size fan, not a mini screamer.

I have it running the Google Coral AI processor and 3 x 4MP cameras at the moment, the plan is to go up to about 7 cameras once I've mastered the AI config. If it handles that then I will probably buy a Blue Iris license for security cameras and keep Linux/Frigate just for the wildlife cameras. It means I can dump two old NVRs as well.

No issues with Windoze 11 so far, other than it being generally annoying....

EDIT seems to be a £100 voucher on it so it is 339. Not bad for the money but I bet there are other similar deals.
