Wine rack

My local the Kings Head in Ross on Wye is having a make over.
The landlord asked me if I could make a wine rack, I said maybe.
He offered a price and I laughed and said x3. he said ok.
A week later he caught me and asked if I had started, oh he means business.
I asked for a deposit and got one. Amazing to get money out of a pub landlord
Hmm a week to get it done.
I had a great idea, simple and bold, he liked it. so I got cracking. A simple geometric arrangement of circles with connecting ribs supporting the bottles. oh so bloody simple. Made up of 200 rings and 300 ribs and about 2000 welds.
I was sick to death of it a few days back. finished it last night and it was installed today.
He likes it, the customers like it. So everybody is happy.

I made all the rings myself out of 8mm mild steel bar with my home designed ring maker MkIII. I will get more photos when it is loaded. I also want the video clip of it slipping and being restrained by the bar maid before barfing it's load all over the floor. That would sound magnificent.

Good job though and another photo with the wine in for your portfolio I think would be a good idea.

Like that but rather you than me. I still have the fruit bowl I made when I came for some tuition and remember doing the rings on your roller, about 50 and that was enough.

I made the rings on my MkIII ring maker

A 3m length of 8mm bar makes 10 100mm rings. I will eventually post my contraption, it has about 5 different sized tubes that slide over each other and makes rings from about 30mm to 100mm.

Ah, so you roll a 'batch of spring' then choppity chop. I had a quick search for your roller last night but no luck. I look forward to seeing it in more detail.

Welcome to copy it, I will post a bit more on it later.That is only the second incarnation, improved it since then.
Modestly says a brilliant piece of brute engineering.
Shiny steel? Nope, I used hot rolled because I like the texture and it is softer than cold drawn (bright finish). Soaked the rings overnight in citric acid, then polished every single one of them pre assembly, then polished the welds with a wire wheel on bench grinder pre assembling the separate units. Then polished them again post final assembly.
I must be off my box.

Thanks Bud , I will have a go at a ring mill , my point about your bright mild steel cos, the only choice I have when buying bar is black or rusty take your pick....jeff..

Brilliant idea for the roller - my only suggestion would maybe to have a spring pushing upwards against the rings while they are being formed, this would keep them 'straighter' / closer together and prevent some of them getting a kink in them and needing to be hammered flat ?

Not sure though if you think that is much of an issue ?

Couple of questions for you....
How on earth did you manage to turn your said contraption in order to bend 8mm round bar?
Did you cut them with a thin cutting disc or have you invented a new way of doing that
Also, would you think it was possible to roll either 10 or (god forbid...) 12mm? :O

I'll be posting some pix myself as I'm about to start my 'techno' welding table and other things which have kept me quiet over the winter....

look at the box section to the right, that is the turning lever

Just make sure you don't slip while turning it as the recoil would be rather painful !

I have just been to the pub, obviously in a professional capacity.
the rack has been loaded and looks fantastic, I will force myself to visit again and get some photos.
The recoil? I was scared to death of that and imagined a proper windmill of death.
But of course not, the steel has been bent past the point at which it springs back, there is a bang as it comes to the end but no big deal.
It does give you popeye arms though.

This is still the MkII model, a bit rough but it works, The tubes slip over each other to allow for different sizes. Is this a work of genius? all made out of The Boxes in The Corner.
I will photograph the latest version tomorrow.
