Working outside - anyone have a heated work surface?

That would be toasty 8ob, but the wood requires up-keep and im looking for a zero effort answer, so I can concentrate on actual tasks.

I work outside, I find if I keep my feet warm and my head warm everything else is warm. I rarely wear gloves for warmth

If I’m cold a helly Hanson thermal long sleeved t shirt, t shirt and hoodie, thermal beanie hat and hood up it stops your neck getting cold.

If I’m really cold I wear trousers and a body warmer as I get hot so quick

on the upside it looks like I’m working really hard even when I’m not doing much

I've got an infrared patio heater that helps keep the chill off even in winds. For the garage, when I get roundtuit, I've got a public toilet type hot air hand dryer

I have a pair of battery operated heated rig boots, Geman make I believe , It's just a pair of thin 3mm insoles with a sort of printed circuit underneath the toe area. Each rechargeable battery about the size of a 20 packed of fags clipped onto the top of my boots, Three heat settings, works great and lasts a good six hours,

Any way of putting together temporary barriers, to keep the wind out, then whatever heat source you use will be more effective.... Even just some form of tarpaulin over framing...

Very pleased with my new heat lamp setup in the garage. Instant warmth and cheap to run. I bought the lamps as separate bulb holders and shades as I had a load of flex and some chain. You can get complete heat lamps for about £16 but one probably wouldn’t be enough.

Do you have a link to the ones you have please? How cheap is cheap to run?

I have 4 set up above my bench. 2 have 250w bulbs and 2 have 175w high efficiency bulbs that give the equivalent of 250w (allegedly). So 850W in total. 0.85 units per hour of electricity. Workpieces on my bench were at 17 degrees yesterday. The ambient temperature in the garage was 7 degrees.

Always been told to heat the chest and the rest takes care of its self. I’ve heard some good reviews of those milwaukee heated jackets/vests. Might be better than muckin about with a barrel

Genuine 'old time' tramps used to put sheets of brown wrapping or newspaper under their jumpers/jackets/coats - seemed to help against the cold

As someone follically challenged I can agree that keeping the bonce covered is important, these Thinsulate woollen hats are the canine's genitalia!

it makes me laugh when people say keep your head covered as you will loose heat no different to any other part of your body that aint covered

Now then, sometimes no matter how hard you try to work you won't get warm.

Rule was drop/locate 40 pallets before you could come out for a "warm" was one of few who could do it in under an hour - big place. I couldn't feel anything coming out.
The thermal gear was so bad it was funny. And never put the end of a big pental pen in your gob, saw a dude with a bit of tongue on the end
The pickers had the same crap gear, they had to fill 20 cages an hour, they would be dripping with sweat when they came out

Pretty sure those working practices would not be allowed now, but ah happy days.

We shrink wrapped a union rep/**** to a pallet once and I lifted him him under one of the freezer blowers for a while, all in good fun, happy days - bloody cold tho

When at the greenkeeping, our wooden shed had no power supply and one outside tap which froze in Winter. I remember overhauling the machinery [ride-on Toros, tractors, etc] and returning to the shed the next day to find the tools frozen to the bench top......yes, REALLY!

At that point I returned home to wait the weather out. And to think I was doing it in my own time as I wasn't officially employed for more than 8 months of the year.....
