I don't think I've ever paid more than a tenner. 840 is car prices for me. It is a beautiful vice, but 4" you're limited.

fair play hi and each to his own but id look at my 840 quid for a very long time before is spend it on a vice personally, and i like dear tools.
you dont strike me as a man thats on a lean budget.
by the way, i have a C39 here too, find it a great box, its about as good as they get in fairness.

I fully agree with all of you - it is a lot!
I'm young and don't have the vast experience and knowledge you gents have. With the investment I make into all of my tools, I hope to learn their uses and also intend to pass that skill on to my son, not forgetting the tools.
I do have a use for the vice, such as rebuilding my bicycle wheels and working on cars. I hope that one day it will help me rebuild old equipment as I would like to follow in your footsteps on this forum.

One day your son will spend some quality time with his father in your workshop learning. Great stuff! Look forward to it. I hope that's not plugged in even without a drill in it.

No plus the e-stop was in.
The motor fan housing was a little twisted with being in its packaging so I was straightening it out

holy cow! What could possibly make a vice cost £840? And would it be eight times better than one that costs £105?

Once you've used a Swindens, it makes your other vices seem hopelessly limited. That's a nice bit of kit though I'm still amazed they actually concocted that crappy swivel bodge.
Also, I buy and sell enough of these things to know - even a fifty year old one can still make two hundred quid...

Rough damaged one's fetch £100 easily and this one which seems well used is probably cheap at the price asked.

I paid 40 quid each for 2 second hand 6 inch record vices. one of them is quick release and was unused its done everything I want in 45 years

Got a massive record vice at work, cost a fiver 10 years ago and has been beaten with sledge hammers and all sorts. Testament to a quality make.

Seen that one doing the rounds. Looks like the jaws don't close, dodgy photos probably hide a multitude of sins but clearly has the wrong rotation clamp bolt so that's most likely been drilled and tapped. Looks like a refugee from the late 1940's. Approach with extreme caution.

my record vice is hopelessly limited to holding something in place securely whilst I work on it. What else does an £840 swindens do then?!!
I (as probably does everyone else on this forum) appreciate that quality tools are not cheap but ultimately they're worth the extra for their performance and longevity however in the case of a vice I really can't get my head round how a 4" vice can cost £840, and be worth it, when good used ones can be had for less than £100 or so.
I just reckon there's better value out there and you can spend any money you save on even more tools.
Please don't take this as any sort of criticism, it's merely my opinion. I think my budget constraints are different from yours! I'm well chuffed that the workshop is coming along and you plan on spending quality time with your son. I hope to do the same too (with my son not yours!)
