The whole turbo thing was amusing.

I remember reading a article about the works rally cars where they could totally bypass the turbo including oil feeds and run normally aspirated and still generate a good chunk of the power.

Yes I did actually watch it the end. That turbo they had looked huge, which is why I thought it was a joke turbo.

I was thinking 'funny! high compression pistons in a turbo' but when I went back and looked, they actually fitted flat-tops, not the domed ones they showed earlier. Very sneaky! I was also wondering how on earth you would get a suitable exhaust manifold for a NA engine in.

They had huge bowls, like soup bowls. No way was it going NA. Al's reaction was awesome

I must admit they had me fooled and I’ve built a high compression NA race engine a few years back and didn’t notice the low comp pistons.
I expect a few keyboard warriors got ready for battle swing that.

Wish I'd held out when I was looking for a Toyota Altezza RS200 rather than finally settling on the Lexus IS200 "Sport" I eventually got.
Maybe if I'd managed to find one with the 207bhp "Beams" 3S-GE rather than just settling for the lethargic/thirsty 153bhp 1G-FE I finally bought the car wouldn't be languishing beside the garage waiting for me to get around to selling it now that I've replaced it with the nipper, much less thirsty and a whole lot more fun to drive........... Mk6 2.0 tdi Golf "Shoppingmobile" !
The Golf may have 15bhp less than the IS, But its got close to another 100 ft-lbs of torque over the lexus's pathetic 144 ft-lbs.

A friend and his wife bought a new IS200 and worked out from the running costs and depreciation a Jensen Interceptor was cheaper to run over the same period as it had a residual value despite the low mpg.

Yeah. When I was commuting in it I'd drive like a priest and still only get around 21mpg !!! Its very un-Japanese how the IS200 is thirsty AND slow (You usually only get one or the other). Luckily I bought it for £2k when it was already a 13 year old car, So I'm guessing in the last 7 years it can't have depreciated by more than......... Erm......... 1700 quid.

I test drove the MR2 turbo with that 3sgte engine back in the day...I decided I would probably get myself into trouble...backwards...thro a hedge.

That mini is going to be seriously quick...if it all holds together long enough of course

I got the MR2 with the 3sge engine...I seem to remember it would do 35+ mpg if I drove it sensibly...which I never did of course!

I used to work with a bloke who owned a mk2 MR2 turbo. We all worked night shift for a big company in the middle of nowhere back then, so after clocking out there was a high speed mass exudes. I'd often chase him down one of the link roads in my 2.8 Capri, and was impressed about how that thing would stick to the road........ RIGHT UP TO THE POINT IT DIDN'T !!!!
I'd been throwing money at the 2.8 for a couple of years by that point so it handled really well (For a Capri) and was almost what would have passed for "fast" back then. So, Because I had an almost fast car, coupled to the usual sub 25 year olds steel balls of immortality to guide my risk perception, I could almost keep up with him on the straights, and actually gain in the corners!!!

Thing is, On more than one occasion he'd hoof it out of a slow corner in front of me, then suddenly I'd be getting blinded by his headlights because his car had spun a 180 ! He was one lucky s0d though, I saw him spin at least three times and heard of three or four OTHER occasions where a corner on the way home had him going backwards, but he never left the road or hit anything. It got so bad that we nicknamed that MR2 "Dead or alive" (Or "DOA" for short. ) because "You spin me right round baby, Right round, like a record, baby Right round round round".......... Well, We thought we were funny **MOD EDIT - LANGUAGE** at the time.

Interesting bonus fact - The MR2 apparently didn't sell very well in France because "MR deux" sounded too much like "Merde" (The French for "Sh*t"). I often thought some of the Toyota marketing folks should have noticed that.
