Zintec? & Gibbs Brand

Gibbs Brand is finally available in the UK! I've bought a few cans and have been spraying everything in sight with the stuff. It's like WD40 but doesn't attract dirt and it's over-paintable.

The guy distributing it is Matt Felce Gibbs Brand UK (the site isn't finished so you have to email him to order). He lives quite close and popped down this morning - he's a hot rod fan.

Planning to strip a whole Renault down to bare metal, and primers (especially self etch) absorb water so aren't good for long term protection. This stuff looks ideal for the job and means I can get a cool picture of the whole car in bare metal before painting.

Glad to see you've discovered the Gibbs on your side of the pond. I sandblasted a Porsche 911 front hood and coated it with Gibbs... that was a year ago now and there's absolutely zero signs of surface rust on it. It's sitting in a cold damp room all winter long. This stuff works, however I would not paint over it. Wipe it down with laquer thinner or a similar quick dry solvent before painting.

Definately it will be wiped off and probably sanded a bit before paint. Problem for me is all the seams in the Renault - whatever I put in them I'll never get out. This stuff will probably be OK staying there.

I've done my chrome bumpers and steel work bench so far. Next the lathe so I can sweep the swarf off. Final plan is a rat look Renault in bare metal, but that will probably be one step too far - we don't have any Californias in the UK (unless there is one near Newcastle).

Danger - that Gibb's stuff sounds interesting. Do you know if it can be applied to already-rusted steel to prevent further corrosion? I use rusted steel in my sculptures and like the look of it, I've used waxoyl in the past for outdoor stuff but you have to heat it and the metal for the best penetration which isn't always ideal.

Yes, you can spray it right over the rust no problem albeit I tend not to do that with Porsche parts....lmfao!

disclaimer: I don't sell the stuff...just a really happy customer. Word of advice....buy a case of this stuff cause your buddies are gonna see it and try to 'borrow' some for testing

Turns it a darker colour though - orangy red rust will tend to turn a dark brown. Cool for nice photos of bare steel panels, but might be an issue for artwork that is supposed to look rusty.

Sounds like it might contain phosphoric acid - it converts rust into phosphates and turns steel black (trouble is it doesn't last). Don't mind a colour change at all, still a better option to painting. I'll get some to play with, even if it isn't suitable for long term protection it sounds as if it would be a very useful thing to have around.

Cheap phosphoric acid can be found at your local farm supplies. They call it Milkstone remover, I think the last lot I brought was about £10 per gallon, I'll check later.

Thanks Mark - I was wondering where it was sold, I still have a 5 litre can I bought years back from a Yacht supply place (as redundant stock) but it's rather old and seems to stay sticky whereas it used to dry hard so I may splash out on a fresh lot - it's useful stuff. Fine for stabilising in-door rusty stuff or to act as a primer before painting (and loads cheaper than hammerite).

I still want to try the Gibbs as it sounds as if it will weather much longer - and free off rusted parts.

You can buy single cans (see the link in Malcolms post earlier) - it makes no difference to me what anyone else buys, just passing on Matt's kind offer of a special deal for forum members.

Si, the active part of jenolite, and of most rust treatments is phosphoric acid. Jenolite is a jelly version so you can lay it on thicker, but costs a lot more than straight phosphoric acid. Paying for a name!!

Jenolite was the de-ruster of choice for my college tutors, I recall. Though i've not used it since then. As Clever Mark says, it's just phosphoric acid etc, (coke?)
The Jenoseel looks tidy though, with some good applications according to the website

And to confirm - any opinions I have will be based on reading blurb or stuff other people say, cos I ain't used niver, innit?

I have used it in the past, s'works gooood. But now just use mad mental twisted wire brush jobbie in 9 inch grinder and blast it all away. Much more efficient/cheaper!
