clever idea but i suspect your biggest problem will be visibility, or lack of. If it does not fill with condensation i suspect the folds and creases will throw light all over the shop and you really need good vision to spray effectively.
My, and most air fed masks have a replaceable film visor and i can tell you from experience just a small build up of paint on the visor is enough to give vision issues.

Hi, Very new to painting 2k, and thought of a way to set up a cheap 'positive pressure mask'. Can anyone advise me it this wouldnt work? I only have to respray a car in a large shed - and it's a once off. I have purchased 30 metres of 6mm clear tube, to one end, I have cable tied to a bicycle helmet, the other end goes to a 2hp air compressor that I will place outside, away from any spraying. The helmet is fitted, and a plastic bag is placed over my head, with the valve of the air compressor turned ON!. The bag goes over my head, the positive compressed fresh air pressurizes the bag, and inflates. the bag is tucked into my disposable painting suit for the job. Can anyone see if there would be a problem with this? I've attached some photos. Even the whole kit can be stored in the bag!

Just in case this isn't a wind up -

Don't breathe air supplied from a compressor without filtering. It contains oil and water, both of which are bad for your lungs. Pneumonia or something. For 2K spraying it's tricky to guarantee there is no paint vapour even when the compressor is outside the garage.

If you are not prepared to do it sensibly then at least consider wearing a good paint filter mask inside your contraption. First post of this thread is worth a read.

The biggest risk with isocyanates if breathing them in. Contaminated air reaching your skin and eyes is very secondary in an occational situation.

The filters in a good quality activated carbon type mask are reasonably effective in themselves. However, because such a mask is under vacuum when you breath in there is a risk of contaminated air coming in around were it "seals" to your face.

If that happens with cellulose paints you will smell it and it may be uncomfortable and make you feel a bit strange but it is unlikly to do any lasting harm. You may not smell isocyanate and it can do lasting harm.

The positive air pressure in an air fed mask ensures air is leaving it rather than entering it.

So I agree with Malcolm, if you want to take risks with your health a good quality activated carbon type mask should be worn inside your plastic bag thingy.

Hello all. I bought a tube of upol tiger seal to seal a leak around the boot opening of the car, I see that it contains isocyanates,is it safe to use or should i just leave it?

Super glue also contains isocyanates. Perfectly safe as long as you don't glue your fingers together

The problem with 2k paint is it hardens by chemical reaction so when you breathe it in as vapour in paint form it hardens in your lungs

Things like Tigerseal and superglue aren't airbourne like paint vapour so can't cause the same problems.

thats not the main problem isocyanates attack the soft fleshy tissue in your body

i still wouldnt sniff it though the fumes make your eyes hurt, and dont put the nozzle in your mouth to try and blow out a blockage it doesnt work, what is does do is cause you to inhale which coats all your teeth and your tongue gets a coat making it feel solid

how do i know this you ask, been there done it never again you end up spitting out bits of glue for ages

I was doing a small paint job a couple of weeks ago in the shed i've got two extracter fans one large one small so on i went with the job mask on a 3M thought that will do the job and it did for the face. the bad mistake was not understanding the paint as i have always used 2K. It wasnt till i woke up in hospital that i was told that I had to be brought back to life as my lungs had shut down and didnt know that it contains isocyante or something like that so it's celluloss from now on.

I've been using 2K with a full face filter mask (not air fed) for 7 years now, not full time, but I've done repairs and a couple of full resprays with 2K and I'm still here. I'm sorry to hear that you copped an unfortunate one with it. The mist does get quite intense, but if you are wearing a mask and have plenty of ventilation, it shouldn't do anything to you. In fact, I've just used some today to do the front end of my car!

I know the topic is quite old but I think my question fits in very well and might be of interest to some of you as well.

I always hear talking about isocyanates, and I get the risks they bring.
There seems to be made no difference between 2K paint and isocynates. Do they always come tegether?
I think I'm starting to use 2K acrylic paint without isocyanates. But what about 2K paint without isocyanates, we need air-fed mask or not?

For example: the paint I'm using now is a 2K acrilyc clear coat (I think). I've just started using it for sealing glassfibre-epoxy parts to make a mold of them.

The MSDS says: "Use A1P2 breathing-protection half mask in case of contact with aerosols."
on page 10.

Don't understand me wrong. I get the fact that a full face mask is never a bad idea.
And it's not about the costs, but it would be quite difficult to put a compressor outside to get fresh air for an air fed mask.
As it is more a one off shot, I can't install the necessary equipment for an air fed mask.

If the A2/P3 mask is insufficient I would rather switch to other paint or get the painting done by other people with the necessary equipment.

its the activator that has the Isocyanate in it not the clear coat its self

Ok I thought the MSDS was for the combined product, my fault.

And a slight panic attack that the paint I used was thus not as save as I thought ...

But then again why the MSDS of the hardener, which mentions the presence of isocyanate's, mentions only an AB2/P3?
If even manufacturers of these products can not be clear about good protection, how can they suspect users of the products do?
