6010 electrodes, worth trying out?

I may be buying a box of Nu5 shortly, if I do I'll let you guys know I'll split the box as there is 13kg of rods per tin if I remember correctly.

Esab have a horrendous recommended retail price on nu5 about half of it is actually the selling price btw

6010 is a relic i think. 7018 is way better. 7018 gives u stronger welds, preforms better in cold conditions, less likley to crack, and is more ductile.
Nicer looking welds too that can manage bigger gaps.


But u cant weld downhill with 7018.

6010 rods I believe are designed for roots and are a high penetrating rods and are really designed for pipe welding also perform with out needing to be baked 7018 is a high tensile strength designed for structure steel some have iron powder in the coating for high recovery but I remember reading that a 7018 are not deep pen rods

And due to the nature of pipe welding the fast freeze slag helps with the constant position change

Not at all just a rod with a different purpose, the two are not really interchangeable.

6010 and 6011 are still widely used for gas pipelines, yes there are better processes available but its kinda like if it aint broke dont fix it procedures probably done in the early 70s simple not much gear to go wrong and can cope with bad fit ups bad weather just a tin of rods 2 cables and were off. 6011 root fill and cap up to 6 inch root uphill, fill and cap down hill Above 6 inch its 6010 sometimes 7010 depending on pipe composition again root uphill fill and cap downhill negative root positive fill and cap normally
downhill root very rarely done now usualy on positive. When done properly the root is almost on par with a tig root BUT a lot of spatter is left in the pipe
DONT use VODEX the clue is in the name vertical overhead and downhand not downhill
for downhill fillets slip on flanges etc BOHLER ohv 6013 no finer rod
hot taps live work filarc 27p

remember every electrode is a deep pen rod it only needs excess current a dodgy prep or a momentary lack of attention and you will have excess penetration like my old tom cats balls

you can buy BOHLER 6013 IN forfar at the bearing suppliers next to the scrappys btw you wont get a better rod but remember on dc its electrode NEGATIVE

creepy i was looking at 6013 2 minutes ago then this pops up lol, in your opinion what would be better for all round work and practising.

as always depends who you get good guy good guy then one time a total w----- was in gettin an obscure tooth belt when i seen the rods they started doing welding stuff i wouldnae use 6013 for a root ever too soft and slaggy but for downhill fillets and flat work negative, more bite less slag interference
