Probably not if just one plugs in but if 15 do that then going but the state of the UKPN cabling in many streets it'll melt the weakest joint or pop the transformer.
They really are miles behind in upgrading the network in a lot of areas, please ignore most of if not all what the government says, have we learned nothing from the last few years?

Well, if you want to get really picky, they were first seriously used over a hundred years ago (but thanks Pedro). Fell out of favour as oil products and ICE engines developed in the early years of the 20th century.

Milk floats have been around a very long time. They virtually fell out of favour by about 25 years ago.

Electric toy cars have been around a very long time - whether similar to scalextric or mechanised ’pedal‘ type toys. My first (which I still have - but with no guide track for it - was a christmas prezzie in the later 1950s.

The Enfield 8000 electric car was introduced during, or after, the 1973 oil shortage (perhaps look up the Jonny Smith project where he converted his to a veritable road-going monster - sponsored (in part?) by Adrian Flux Insurance).

The Sinclair C5 came along early in 1985.

The Nissan Leaf was first introduced in 2010, but not too common (and not in the UK), after Musk introduced his first BEV in 2008, but let’s be a bit more sensible about the ‘general’ introduction in reasonable numbers. 10 years was just an approximate round number, without being precise. But as you commented, the above may be a bit of education for you.

Please don't involve the Sinclair in anything but the Jokes thread. Even Sir Clive refused to drive one at the press launch so I've been told.

Ive just been out and had a drive down some of the Avenues and Terrace streets where I live with no off street parking. Must make up 70% of the houses here

Depends what your priority is I guess - if you’ve had you or your loved ones life saved then I guess you might think it a price worth paying, alternatively if your perpetually looking for a negative aspect then your probably never going to be happy.

Edit - I’m not even sure the write off thing is even directly related to safety, I always thought it’s just the general price of extraneous plastic bits and the cost of parts in general from manufacturers.

Glued seams also has big an impact on repairs , in the days of spot welded metal joints /seams it was easier to repair . Ungluing and regluing is much more difficult but that has been the price of a greater fuel economy.

Just purchased a 1.5 litre four inch wide necked sports drinking bottle from Tesco for such eventualities @ £ 6.50 .
I now have three such bottles in my car ...managing to fill two in one day .

Four inches wide WoW !! No further comment needed.

A few yard down the road I found out:



It's a car charging socket, buried in the pavement, so people without off-road parking can charge their cars without running a trip hazard across the path! And it's not just for new builds.


It's made by Trojan energy if you want to Google it, I don't know anything about it but it looks like a good solution to the no-off-road parking/trip hazard argument.

Only time I've had locking wheel bolts/nuts was when I bought and fitted them.

I thought when we were in the EU it was a requirement for all new cars to be fitted with them & the manufactures of cars now just do it for all marques as a matter of course in the car plants production factories.

I've had factory fitted locking nuts on all my new cars since 1997 ( the last six cars )

Bit longer than that, the first production electric vehicle was in 1844.

In the mid 1950's my polio crippled aunt had an electric tiller steered three wheeler able to do 25 mph and do a 40 mile round trip without re charging . The battery charger in her government provided vehicle shelter was massive so were the two humongous lead acid batteries under her seat .

Though she had numerous friends who also had battery charging facilities for her to use to top up . Her biggest journey was from Chapel hill Lincolnshire to St Lloyds college Exeter a journey that had top be planned well in advance for both out and back

My understanding is that Petrol is (at least was originally) basically a by-product of the oil industry... (I might be wrong)
Whilst the ocean-and-road-shipping industries exist (and worldwide-military-consumption continues), (and kerosene for worldwide-airline industries) Petrol presumably still will be produced by default...

So they need cars for petrol consumption or there will be a glut of petrol waiting to be dumped by the fly-tippers....

4 adults here, with 1 petrol and 3 diesel cars. Looks like we might need to switch to 4 Petrol cars, rather than EVs.
Always fancied a petrol V8

But if we 4 are all forced to convert to EV...
We'll have to queue to even use the home charger

its like technology has gone full circle, gone are the days when a steam lorry (or traction engine) would take water from a fire hydrant.
and Ive just been listening to a conversation about driverless hire cars on the radio, the technology in modern vehicles is fantastic, but unfortunately I dont have a smart phone yet so would be unable to use on as I dont have the app to operate it.
I think its one of those things with technology, some people will go with it and some will be negative about it, but that's just human nature. when things become an every day normality, then you'll wonder what all the fuss was about. if this thread is still running in another 10 years time (and still on track) we'll be able to see how peoples views have changed.

Point me out an electric vehicle that can tow 3.5t and have a half decent range (at least 150 miles while towing said load up Welsh roads) then I might consider one. Actually scratch that point me out an electric vehicle that can tow 3.5t...

It's horses for courses and everybody has different requirements. Down here I'm at least once a week towing with a minimum of 1.5t and the flattest road out of my place has a 300 yard 1 in 4 but doesn't go in a direction that's useful to anyone. The next is a 200 yard 1 in 3 climb which does go somewhere useful.

But I'm am oddball - if I was back in Surrey an electric vehicle might have made sense but then all the local journeys I could have walked, cycled or got public transport. That's what needs improving is the convenience and cost of public transport. If there was a reliable and cost effective way for me to go to Scotland or London via the train then I probably would. When I can drive to London (towing) in a 4.4TDV8 Range Rover cheaper than I can get a train ticket for then something is majorly wrong with the system.

I understand that at the refinery's crackled crude is where it is decided to convert it to diesel , petrol or other refined chemicals it's very variable not a set percentage .

EV ships , EV & electronic blade sail ships and small unit nuclear powered commercial ships are a lot closer to being the norm than you think . The race began about 14 years ago , I gather some are in production & use .

Only pickup I've seen (and in fact owned) that seems sensible is the Sandringham 6x6 because you can actually fit a builders bag of sand in the back without being overweight. You can also fit 8x4 sheets flat in the bed without having to have them stick out.

I had a business model once we cooked up over (far too many) beers one night where we would drive round office car parks in the day filling up petrol or diesel from our bowser. One less thing for folk to do on their way home. Many many issues to resolve… but I don’t know if there’s a parallel concept. Those charging points in the footpath - I would put them into the “too little too late too difficult” bucket. But I haven’t really got any expertise in the field !!
