Not reading all that but if anyone ain't said it a non centred electrode within the flux core will do this all on its own sometimes.
Cheap 6013 are notorious for being off centre or just this way n that.
The arc will simply flip on you!

You won't get it with good quality rods though

Arc blow will tend to pull the arc to the side with the higher mass, if thicker steel or larger piece is on one side.
With fillet the arc in the corner can be pulled toward the vertical plate hence cold metal deposit and undercut on vertical side
With a short enough arc this may not happen so much.
My question is : do you notice a slight arc blow with short arc? (it happened me to have consistent undercut on the vertical member)
Do arc force generate easier arc blow?

As Kent said arc blow is a totally different issue to uneven flux coating

Sorry, sure it is not related. I never seen a non centered electrode, BTW, but it makes me think of arc displaced by arc blow

Yes, that's likely if you have only ever bought decent rods

It restricts movement and also you are holding more weight than if you just let the loose cable fall to the floor

I did check yesterday, I had the arm so relaxed that even the weight of 2feet of cable I dont like. (a relaxed arm+shoulder mean that most of the arm"s weight is balanced by back bone muscles, small mass differences are much perceived that way)
But, what I noticed is that I prefer to hold the stinger near the rod, (in front of the lock arm)
If I leave the lead down the floor, or even with a hook half height, I feel it as a damper, which can be good, but then for a correct balance I need to hold the stinger farther on the handle.

May be that can help, the lead weight making a sort of virtual prop (?)
I would prefer a stinger that allow to bend the rod to my liking then. I did notice a pipe guy that almost systematically bend the rod 90°, he did not tell me why but I think it allows to have the rod on the side of the stinger, hence better view aiming directly at the rod. What you think?

Just do what you feel most comfortable with, my personal preference is to use the screw type stinger where you can bend the rod to the exact angle you need to suit the aPplication

I did some training today in G2 - as always it take some time to begin to straighten the beads. It was 1/8 Lincoln 7018-1 - no drying - 118 125A

I had very little spatter, I suppose it is the sign of a good machine .

At some point I wanted to switch directions, and used my left hand so to see better the puddle, very strangely the 6 beads I did with left hand where honorables, a good surprise. Still some problems with the starts hence porosities - Why is it that if I put 70% hot start the start is less easy (sticking more) ?

Please somebody give me a trick to avoid bowing and loosing the straight line as there :


Could it be helping if I take care of being positioned more toward the right side/end of my piece ? I notice there is a moment where my arm opens from the body , I do not "lock it " on the ribs as I feel it restrict my moves. Also often there is a position at half bead where I do not see as well around the bead I do not get why.
The other hand stabilise the torso by holding something. ( also, a tight arc mean that if the precedent bead is not straight it will tend to push me away)
