that top weld is looking good mate your sure improving, try stacking your runs when you got good beads of weld, also on a side note is this your mig welder..

ok 2 good welders your arc welding sure seems to becoming along, the videos I added are some of what I've watched over and over again, also are you still on 2.5 rods...

I've practically learned how to stick weld watching chuckE2009 and weld.com
After that I've put 6 or 7 good years of practice , and I'm still learning
Would like to learn other processes but I need another welder for that and I really need a Plasma cutter right now
Yes I have seen alot of wed.com vids and I have seen those except the last one on 6013s which confirms what I had to do giving more angle to keep the slag out of the pool.

I have run a few more welds And starting to get more consistency but not yet to the stage I could go strait in on a part and get it right first time.
Rods aren't that expensive so I will keep practicing whenever I can.
I have just replaced the bottle for my mig and have been practicing with that also.
I have to say I seem to get a much better looking weld with stick.

keep at mate or you thinking of getting a dc set..
For the moment I think I'll try and conquer what I have.
I also have Oxy acetylene and a metal lathe,And a propane forge and anvil, So plenty to keep me busy, But on my most wanted list is a Bridgeport milling machine

Machining is probably harder than welding
You have most of the things I'm trying to get a day
I would keep an eye on European style milling machines like a shaublin
But thrust me I'm practically re-born once I bought a DC welder
Completely different world
Starting from the weight , much easier to Carry around an inverter than a buzz box
Finally a way to control the penetration depth
Easy Arc strikes
Easier to use
Much better
And finally low hydrogen welding without using a loud engine driven welder

In 17 months I use my inverter ,I did never managed to hot the duty cycle once
Even after 45 3.2mm or ⅛" 7018 rods
I was in the lucky position years ago to have worked in a machine shop and gain skills and knowledge in machining ( Far better as a hobby than a job ).
Schaublin dont seem as popular in the uk but seem very popular to Tom senior machines Wich are plentiful.
So dc inverter welders, Would a cheap dc arc welder be a huge benefit over ac?, I'm not too worried about duty cycle as I dont do that much welding.

mate it can be classed as night and day but be careful when you look at cheep dc inverters, what would you budget for one..

It's more about arc stability and power reserves, on both AC and DC.
Its like the difference between a buzzbox and an old oil cooled transformer set - they are both AC, but the oilcooled set has a bigger transformer and better quality components, which translates into a smoother arc, and also a more powerful, predictable arc - you can close up the arc length on a lower amperage, without extinguishing the arc and shorting the rod, for example.
It's not necessarily the DC part, but the circuit design itself, that allows easier welding. DC is nice, though.
Most inverter sets have auto "arc force" which ramps up the amps a little when the arc length is short, to stop the rod from sticking. Usually this is a really handy thing.
erm... what else... "anti stick" which gives it a whack of power when striking up, to help prevent rods from... well... sticking...
At the low end, a lot of this stuff is fixed, even on the most chinese of DC inverters, and they'll run 6013 rods no problem. At the top end, you have adjustable everything, higher and more powerful reserves, to give the smoothest and easiest welds.
Best DC inverters... fronius accupocket, Lorch micorstick, kemppi minarc
down a rung or two, Parweld, jasic, gys etc, anything over 160 amps will generally be decent.
Other option is to find an oilcooled pickhill or oxford AC, but personally, I'd rather have the DC inverter. There's not much you can't do with DC.
