That's cool..that's what I thought.will give it a go once I make a little jih to hold the angle grinder in the corect position. ..

I have done it just by putting the empty wheel on the drive axle and run the car in gear, mark it and work to the line obviously cut the outer off first. if doing my style of using two sets of wheels then it only costs scrap wheels and the welding is less

I did think about doing with the rim on the car..with the arthritis in my wrists and elbows I find it difficult to hold things steady.hence the jig to hold grinder..but I will post pics as I go..thank you for your input and pictures. .

Don't forget the steering geometry could be altered by doing this, the vehicle may behave differently and worse case scenario (which nobody wants) is an accident and the insurance company look into ANY modifications to the vehicle, if they can get out of paying and put the blame on you you could be looking at getting your collar felt. You probably laughing now after seeing the pic of my truck and it's wheels and tyres BUT I was running the risk every time I took the beast out on the road. If your happy with the above then have fun and get the wide boots on there

I totally understand where your coming from and I do agree..I will only run them on the rear to give it the pro street look without the v8 up front..pointless to some but it's all about being different. .safety is my top concern. .

When I have got the steel band tacked in and all seams OK. ..what sort of length of weld would I need..3 inches or less.or more.as to much heat will start to distort.

Hi, If you just want the look you might be better off reverse rimming those wheels. Drill out the spot welds in the well to release the centre from the rim, reverse the rim, reweld. It would be easier to line up again and less welding. I can put up a link to another forum to show what I mean if you want, either here or by PM.

For what you can buy new barrels for I usually just make the centres and stick them into new barrels, no worry about alignment, HAZ, etc, then.

Didn't some banded wheels used to have triangular fillets welded from the centre to the outer rim as additional strengthing/ support? I suppose it could make balancing a nightmare......

I agree..I can't stand it when the tyres are stretched over a rim..definitely shall not be doing that.

to me stretched tyres look like you have a set of wide wheels but can't afford the correct profile tyres to fit them. I might end up banding a set of wheels for my herald from 3.5" wide to 5.5" wide, as the 165/65/13 wheels tyres that I have on 4.5" rims look like ballons on those rims.

Morning all.been doing lots of research regarding the steel wheels banding...lot of information and people doing things different ways..now...welding the steel bands..I have seen people doing one continuous seam with a positioner. And the stop and start method. ..

I wouldn't do that, I would fit the right width tyre
