banding steel rims..

Didn't some banded wheels used to have triangular fillets welded from the centre to the outer rim as additional strengthing/ support? I suppose it could make balancing a nightmare......

Or has my memory deserted me completely?

If it's done correctly they are not needed

Been busy messing about this afternoon making a little jig to hold angle grinder in a near as sensible position as I can..sensible is debatable but there ya go...all I got to do is grind in a streight line...so this is what I came up with....crude I know.m

I agree with you langy. .the funding I had for new machinery has gone due to yet again another knee operation. Third one now.so currently retired from my job and looking for something less stressful. .I will try it.if I fail.nothing lost or gained. .

Morning all.been doing lots of research regarding the steel wheels banding...lot of information and people doing things different ways..now...welding the steel bands..I have seen people doing one continuous seam with a positioner. And the stop and start method. ..

my view is when wheels are welded they are done in one process start to finish but they are held in position
if doing freehand, I would put loads of VERY small tacks to position/centralize it properly , do arunout check, then do one tidy run but mount the wheel on a hand rotator, IE old hub, so that you can keep it turning at YOUR speed

Material will only be 2.5 -3mm max so should not need a lot of heat what I would do is get some sheet material of same thickness and do some flat tests, to establish the gaping of the two apart, so that you can match that accurately with your rims and get good penetration but also good filling of the joint, if done correctly you should not need to weld both sides.

Long, long ago, in a galaxy far, far away.... I had a set of five wheels banded for my Hillman Minx. 1½" bands to take the scrawny 4½J rims up to a more sporting 6.
The wheels were expertly done by a small company in Ilford (who aren't there any more, I think, it was 40 years ago).

Parted-off on big lathe, band was rolled and butt-welded, then seam-welded into the two halves of the old rim. No silly reinforcements as the band wasn't a ridiculous width, as some were - usually the ones that came apart and caused accidents.

Things to remember - the inflated tyre will be trying to tear the welds of a banded rim apart.
At 70mph (you don't go faster than that, do you?) your wheels are revolving at about 1100 rpm on a 13" wheel with (say) a 185/70 tyre. Now, imagine that same wheel and tyre, poorly welded and balanced, fixed in a lathe doing 1100 rpm, you may prefer to watch that from behind a brick wall, wearing a tin hat.

I've migged them years ago but these days tig is a far better way, I tack then check for trueness then seam weld then check again

Well this afternoon I have made a few upgrade to one's crude jig..made little depth stop so I don't go ploughing to deep..just a bit of plate set 2.5 mm .depth stop sounds better..and a couple of braces so everything should go back as was..hope anyway..m

I had thort of this..I had a new disc and one that's 2mm less ..so set the stop at 2mm so the new disc will only go as far as..might have to change a couple of time lol..
