Bedford parts are still obtainable cheap , there were plenty of civvy ones so you don't get the usual **ex mil,exarmy, EX-SAS** chancers trying to sell something for 3 times its actual value. Frankly , I'd spend a little more, get your lad through his class 3 and buy a daf 45 4x4

You are supposed to mount the kerb every so many miles on tarmac to bounce a wheel up and unwind the diffs!!!

Don't use one as a base for an off road camper/motor home , the chassis are designed to twist and I've seen bodies break on them as they've been built too rigid.
Other than that, good useable wagons, even better if you put a cummins or Perkins diesel in

Indeed the chassis rails are VERY LIGHT even in comparison to the later TK. An old guy who ran a mobile welding service many many moons ago used a TK (Disc braked) and petrol engine. He maintained that the petrol TK was nearly as economical as the diesel version he also had. Only the petrol one had far superior performance.

I've got a John Deere 2130 and loader but it's over a KM from the barn to tarmac so it's a real faff using the tractor to shift materials up the hill...
Drive van to bottom of hill and park up - walk up track to tractor - start tractor and hitch up trailer - drive down track - transfer materials and tools required for job trying not to forget anything - drive tractor uphill - unload tools and materials in barn - end of day drive tractor with tools down track - unload tools - drive tractor back up to barn - walk back down track.
It's even more of a faff if I already have an implement hitched to the back of the tractor.

I've still got to tax and MOT it though whereas the RL's are tax and MOT exempt.

I reckon I'm only going to be doing around 50 miles a week plus the odd 80 mile max round trip for camping/festivals so it's not going to break the bank or my back.

The idea is to have a canvas tilt and use the tractor and loader to load a 'camping pod' onto the back, basically a glorified wooden box.

Be careful, technically you can't carry a load on a car licence. Was a young lad got shafted a few years back, same deal, pre 60's wagon, flat bed. Drove his car down to collect wagon, loaded car on back and set off home. Ministry tugged him and the coppers did him for carrying a load.

Most RL's are under 7.5T so with a pre 1997 licence you can use it laden so long as it's not for commercial use.
If you use it commercially you are no longer exempt from Tax.

I did toy with getting a 4WD van, there are plenty of ex-gas board AWD transits about but they are expensive, will depreciate over time, complicated if they have a breakdown, awkward to use as a camper and a works vehicle and NO FUN!

Toyota hilux single cab PU and a suitable size trailer,be my choice
Problem with old ex military are spares although plenty of it its not cheap,and i'll be honest here british army stuff is well below par compared to the rest out there

I did look at a pickup but you don't get alot for your money, it wouldn't be any good for work, I'd have to tax and MOT it, not much good as a camper and again NO FUN.

Fair point i suppose,pros and cons no matter how you look at it,i'd only have an RL if it were for showing TBH,DAF 45 next,4x4 transits are about but prices are high(did read on the transit forum some guy fitted one with merc running gear),the camping pod on the back of something sounds a cool idea

You can register almost any truck AG which is still MOT and tax exempt, same as the unimogs and can be driven on a car license.

Like this, at least you can then carry timber etc, run on red diesel etc for farm/forestry use.
