Bent Motor Shaft

I am officially an idiot.

I have taken apart my motor and ended up managing to drop the rotor with the end housing on the shaft, and it has bent.

The only good news is it didn’t land on me, crack the casting or bend the rotor fins.

Now how can I get the rotor bent straight enough to take the housing off, and how do I go about straightening it? I don’t have oxy acetylene or any other means of heating it.

Length of thick wall tube slipped over the shaft and use for leverage. May risk damaging the bearing housing though, so clamp that in the vice or suchlike.

not that im going to be much help but im sure a idea of size of the shaft would be helpfull in what to do so people can offer better advice

if its sleeve bearing ,difficult,if roller bearing the end plate will release from that no problem, if so you need some one with a lathe, a pepper pot,dial gauge etc, and the skill to straighten it, thats how its done in rewind shop.

Unless the bearing is retained by a circlip or plate on the inside.

I used to rewind motors,(thousands)normally inside grease retainer plate is secured by two long screws /bolts that are easily found on the outside of end plate.other than that will have a plate secured by bearing fit which will stay on shaft.

Hammer it close to straight, take the cable off and stick it on eBay as untested.

Really though unless its something special; dual speed, unusual form factor, etc, I'd just bin it, you can pick up old motors for next to nothing.

19mm shaft, wick fed bearing. It’s just machined through the housing casting.

What sort of motor is it? It may be easier just to get a new chinesium one.

You’d think it would be easy to get a new motor but here in NZ they seem to be few and far between in my price range. I don’t really want to pay $240 for a new motor, this one cost $36 after searching for months. I’m bloody annoyed I let it fall

i agree with the others, put a pipe over the end in a vice and use leverage to straighten it as best as you can untill you can take it apart and straighten it and test it with a DTI between centers

Depends how much free time you have and if you have a working lathe,

Have a big old motor from my lathe that has a knackered shaft. Eventually il clock it up and turn the shaft down before sleeving. Decent old motor and shame to scrap it.

I hope you meen feet? With that shaft, once you get it out, you can either straighten the shaft else cut the bent portion off, drill and tap the rotor shaft and make a new end piece, with one end threaded to couple into the shaft. It's sortable. This is one of those fun times called "experience".

The problem is to get it straight enough to remove the cover including outer bearing it will mean loading the bearing race up and thats if your lucky enough not to crack the case with a 5ft bar on it...if it was mine then i would bin it,but knowing me i would try fix it first so in any case good luck if it was not £30,000 for shipping i would give you a motor for free as there pretty easy to source around my world

Did you have a lathe?

If so, you could do what you need to to get it off without worrying too much about the shaft/casing.

Then, when apart, if you've damaged the housing, you can bore it out to take either an insert or a ball bearing. Or a couple ball bearings stacked if space dictates.

Similarly with the shaft, get it as straight as possible by hitting/bending it. Then, with a dti, clock it up and turn the shaft down to take either a sleeve or the corresponding bearing/s you've chosen.
