But if that’s what serving as a bearing then surely it will accommodate a bend in the shaft?

And I’ve just been out to the play pen. I haven’t been able to introduce a measurable bend to a 18mm steel bar of unknown type.

I’ve given it some welly throwing it at the anvil, only just dented the end slightly

I don't think that's the bearing. It's only serving as an oil wick if I read the post correctly.

Things only do the opposite of what you want, or you’re just not trying hard enough.

I would assume the motor must be running in a plain bearing shell. Never seen one like it but never seen that mass of wick before either. The shaft is most likely a tough carbon steel and therefore a non trivial item to bend unless the motor is totally stripped. Whatever bushing or bearing is carrying it can inly survive so much punishment.

I'd probably fit a chunk of aluminium to the bent shaft and turn it down on the shaft. Ideally you could do that by using the motor itself to turn it.

If I drop a screw, nut or bolt onto the floor in my shed, even if you see or hear where it lands, it will have vanished.

Colchester loved using springs and ball bearings.

If you’ve ever opened up one of the handles on their lathes... three balls, three springs, under high tension friction fit... pew pew pew

Still not sure how I fitted them back together, or found them for that matter!

The handle on the topslide of my Chipmaster I'd wedged on with a bit of paper after a spring and two balls went to explore the abyss.

See you’re doing things the sensible way. And you’re actually *trying* to get it to bend. You need to want it to stay straight like your whole project depends on it, only then do you get that shower of swear words and more importantly, a bend!
