If we stay on earth we face extinction in a few billion years...so I guess the main purpose is to avoid that from happening by being able to leave.

I'm pretty certain we are on track to go extinct well before that. Especially if we carry on as we have been. But the older I get the less certain I am if that is entirely a bad thing...

Its the populating Mars bit I was referring to. I get the satellite/payload launch bit, that makes sense.

If I could choose which 100 people went on the x number of years journey via SpaceX to Mars with no guarantee of return, then that would be a different matter
