I'm trying to work out whether the pollution caused by the starship at launch is more than offset by the 100+ people who will leave the planet to go to mars.

Surely the 100+ people plus their descendents over all their lifetimes would create more pollution on earth if they stayed Vs the rocket?

Silly conjecture time. So only the one rocket will be sent to mars ? What about the supp[ies of essential life sustaining Mars bars .I suppose they will be able to make their own.

I think the point is...if you remove say 1 million humans from earth aren't you reducing/removing their environmental impact...and if you do it by emitting less pollution than said humans would create on earth...then the net impact is that it's good for the planet.

Covid took off nearly 7 million of the population globally, (6,897,000 the internet tells me), considering roughly 8 billion people on earth, it's still pretty inconsequential.

Well I was actually thinking "remove" in the sense of sending them off on a rocket on a voluntary basis!

With the ability to grasp the wrong end of the stick with such ease perhaps I can suggest a career with HMRC...or as an insurance loss assessor


Anyone know if the starship is still welded stainless...or did they change that part of the design?

I went to the Kennedy Space Centre a few weeks ago. Loved it.
Not has high tech as people think. Just done on a vast scale.
Rivets just normal aircraft grade.
Welding better than mine but not as good as the people on this forum!
The original lunar rover had seats that looked like they were from a WW1 biplane. Canvas and leather

They had one of the boosters from Musk's rocket. The one that landed back on the barge. They should forget reusable. Too harsh an environment. They found that out with the Shuttle. A Saturn V launch was cheaper and carried far more.
I soon worked out how the Musk rocket managed to land vertical. See the guide vanes at the top - obviously fold open and then control descent.

Weathering detail looks amazing - as it is genuine - better than Star Wars!
