What are the sources of your info? Some people say Blair is a war criminal as we did not have UN approval to invade Iraq. I was working for the Royal Ordnance defence company at that time (in which the Government had a "Golden Share"), so I'm starting to get nervous. I think von Braun just survived. Should we be looking at the scientists who built the bomb and debate all the angles re its use in '45 on Japanese cities? It was Einstein who persuaded Roosevelt to build the bomb.

V1 was a flying machine powered by a jet motor. V2 was a missile propelled by a rocket motor. Couldn't get much different apart from they both moved through the air.

Physically completely different, obviously. I meant that they essentially did exactly the same thing, dropped bombs randomly (and terrifyingly) over London, but the V2 looked more impressive. It also cost a lot more and used resources that would probably have been better used building hundreds if not thousands more V2s. Fortunately for us, that's not what they did.

His letter of 1939 may have helped persuade Roosevelt, but he only sent it as he thought the Nazis would get there first. He knew they had some talented physicists.

It was Britain that actually did most of the early research. The Germans weren't as close as people think. Heavy water lead them down a blind alley.
It was a British scientist at ICI that developed uranium enrichment. And a British team that proved the concept.
We gave them all our research along with radar and jet engines.
Look up Tube Alloys and MAUD.
I honestly believe if the USA hadn't come into the war we would have developed the atomic bomb and dropped it on Berlin.

If we had lost the war, Barnes Wallis would have been a war criminal.

A fanatical Nazi would not have wanted to have wasted his time on something as 'academic' as large rockets, which would not play a major role in warfare for decades. A dedicated Nazi would have wanted to work on something more productive. The Germans would have done better to have given higher priority to development of the jet engine and the the process of making oil and petrol from coal.

If any of us had been alive in Germany after 1933, and been "invited" to join the Nazi party, I suspect few of us would have said no. Your own life and those of your family would have been worthless if you'd declined.

In 1969, the Americans landed a man on the Moon, and for the rest of history, anyone who ever takes an interest will learn that a crucial contribution to that achievement was made by von Braun's team of rocket engineers.

It was always my dream to work in aeronautics. I did theoretical physics instead. Now I have a real passion for engineering so buy heavy lumps of old iron!

In among the 180 listed, there must be some which could be considered fair and impartial. Acknowledging the fact that Wiki can be a source of tripe, I think the Wiki account of von Braun's life seems "fair". That page has been consistent (i.e. not radically edited) for a long time.
