I believe that there was no plan to recover either bit, but I think both parts were supposed to do soft landing tests before crashing into the sea.

It travelled through Max Q on its very first flight which proves the fundamental design is good. Failure to separate will turn out to be a relatively small detail. It's a bit like a brand new F1 car on track for the first time, besting all the sector times, but failing to complete the lap because a tyre failed. Musk is a hero... but sometimes a bit wacky.

Do you work for the current Government? You almost convinced me that the failure to enter its orbit was a total success, don't care how much you sugar coat it the thing got stuck together and exploded. In my experience of Rocket technology (which is zero) the easy bit was lighting the rocket and the hard bit was separation and coordinates to its chosen spot in space.

I think my post #149 is close to the mark. And as I pointed out earlier, the problem could just be a line of computer code. The very first ever Ariane V launch was a disaster purely due to a software issues, but that vehicle went on to have a great success record, including putting the James Webb Telescope in to such a precise spot that the spacecraft conserved lots of its own propellant, so greatly extending its life.
Stage-separation needs a number of explosive bolts to act in unison and then retro-rockets to fire to slow the spent stage down. That method and that technology is well-proven. It seems very likely to me that the flight ended badly through some minor failure (i.e. easily fixable) of those components, but the fact the first stage reached and passed Max Q proves that it's fundamentally viable. The design needs no huge changes. I'd happily bet £1k the rocket is successfully working and putting huge payloads into orbit fairly quickly, going on to Make Musk huge amounts of money.

First launch and achieving what they did is a serious achievement.
You need to realise that this is probably the first rocket development in the public eye, the rest happened in places that conspiracy nuts would die to see. the history of rocketry is littered with stuff that blew before it left the launchpad to stuf that failed in space and died or never returned, failed to activate, just plain failed 40 million miles from home.
