BOC and Volkszone - Gas Offer

Most local BOC depots don't know about the Volkszone deal, But extremely easy, ring the phone number given above and set up an account, Then once set up just go to the local depot with your account number and collect your 20ltr bottle of argoshield light or pure argon the same 20ltr size, All billing comes from the sales office and they know you are on the special deal.

I have just been through this process - the girl I spoke to in BOC Manchester said that the Volkzone deal was no longer available, but she knew about it. It was now called 'Hobbyist Welder' account and works as follows:-

You would need to open a BOC account to trade. I asked for the Y cylinder and got the following (As first time I have done this I have no idea whether they are any good ! ) :

I am sorry but I didn't ask that question - she implied it was effectively the same deal, but with a different name.

Guess we should ask what Volkzone welders on this forum pay.......

Kinda sounds like it's the same deal, with a better name. Given how few BOC employees or franchisees have heard of it, the new name seems a lot more plausible.

Hi, Guys. I have just spoken to Stuart Anderson at BOC. Re: Volkzone offer, Anybody with a volkzone deal, it will stay just as it was, Only with a name change . He said there were a few deals with different names, all the same deal as Volkzone. they must just be putting them all under the same heading now.He also said that he is pushing from his end to try and get a hobbyist deal on Oxy/acetylene.So that will be good news if it comes off.

Further to your email i can confirm that the Volks zone deal and the Hobbyist Account are one and the same we just sometimes use different terminology to describe them .
Therefore you do not need to take any further action .

Ditto. Was looking at the prices of rent free acetylene at my local weld shop today and needed a sit down afterwards.

I could think of plenty uses for an O/A setup, especially on some suspension bolts that have essentially rusted themselves into place..
I also quite enjoy O/A welding...not bad at all at it...tho can't seem to get a handle on TIG at all....

Out of all the processes (MIG, TIG, MMA) I find TIG to be the only one that I feel vaguely comfortable with. I learnt OA from my Dad many moons ago and it's quite like it to me. Gas is still the most civilised and relaxing for me still though.

Im thinking of changing to this for Argon for TIG welding, but for MIG welding as I use CO2 pub cylinders, which seems to last about a year. how much welding time should I get out of a bottle of argoshield. Im guessing its not going to be anything like the welding time I get out of a CO2 cylinder. I normally use 10lpm.

I can't help with a comparison between a pub bottle of CO2 and the BOC argoshield, all I can say is that I'd have thought the CO2 will be working out cheaper.
The downside is that it isn't as nice to use as CO2, but that bothers some more than others.

For TIG work I think the BOC deal is probably very hard to beat unless you do a minuscule amount welding with it. Bear in mind BOC fill the bottles to 230 bar which not all gas suppliers do (I'm thinking of some rent free suppliers) which has to be considered when pricing things up.

yeah think you mean the argoshield is nicer to use than CO2, but its all Ive used for the last 20 years, but the argoshield is suposed to be nicer as it doesnt put as much heat into the metal, which causes less distortion and you also get less spatter. I may get argoshield just for use on delicate work, and still use CO2 for the rougher stuff

I've used 2 adams gas rent free cylinders of argon in the last year, so the BOC option is better option, but I can get the rent free cylinders of co2 and argon when I'm not working, to get to the local BOC, I'll have to go when I'm off work on holiday....so it looks like I'll be signing upto BOC in a couple of weeks
