Laurence, I think you may be misinterpreting my post about contacting BOC before collecting a cylinder on the hobby deal as having to do so each time you get a refill.

£9.00 paid monthly per month by Direct Debit to cover bottle rental --- refills have to be paid for separately, of course, when you return the empty but mine last me ages.

Just for info I applied for an account this morning via their electronic form which was easy- i could not get through on the phone so used the live chat which worked fine - prices quotes are as follows
Refil... Oxygen size Y is £12, Acetylene size J is £45.
Each cylinder £45 annual rental excl VAT which equates to £54 per bottle incl vat on a yearly rental via DD.
I have wanted to get back in to oxy/gas welding alongside the mig for ages and this is a good deal if it all works out

That's interesting, mine were over £200 for rental and why I returned them through lack of use.
Signed up for this the other day, was advised on the phone might be quicker to go into the store and set it up there (guessing because they needed two forms of photo ID?). The Basildon store in Essex knew about it and there was no dramas. Ironically, they phoned up the sales guys, sorted a bit out, passed the phone over to me and then I did all the personal details stuff. Emails were sent, filled out there and then, while I was filling them out my account was set up. Pretty efficient really. Initially I wasn't getting the hobby discount so they rang up and sorted that out there and then, saved me the hassle later!
Only thing that almost caught me (them?) out was they (at the actual store) initially thought I needed a utility bill but there was no issues when they actually rang up. Not sure if this is because I had my driving licence, which has your address on or if it is just two forms of photo ID. Would have thought one would need to have proof of address, hence why I made sure I had the driving licence.
Didn't pay much attention to how long it took but can't have been in there much longer than 30 mins before walking out with a bottle, including trying on some gloves and just a general quick browse. So if you have an actual BOC nearby, may be the way to go to set up an account? No idea how long it would take purely over the phone.

That's how I did mine [local(ish)] BOC depot had never heard of the scheme. Didn't take very long, short conversation then all the rest was done by email. Forms sent and completed online....job jobbed

Aye, afaik - but there's a separate number you need to call which is manned by a specialist team. If you search back the thread the number is quoted and it was known as Volkszone [now Hobbyist].
