BOC and Volkszone - Gas Offer

this is a better deal than the hobbyweld 5 price. It nearly double pressure for cheaper refill. I'm going to use up my bottle of hobbyweld then go and get this. ill have a read of this on how you do it.

i thought the 20l hobby has more in it than the BOC

Hobbyweld are 137 bar, boc and sgs are 200 bar. More pressure in the same size bottle equates to more volume of gas when expanded at atmospheric pressure!

The hobbyweld contains 6.13cm3 compared with the BOC at 4.84cm3 so a fair bit more in same size bottle...i thought the price was ok given no rent to pay... SGS i think was 4.0cm3

I might switch to SGS, i saw it in a CarSpares branch, £120 deposit, £38 refill no rental, I pay BOC IIRC £48 per year plus one refill Y size of £39 think.

I think the bottle is slightly smaller but should still save money, have to collect either way.

See if you can find out the fill pressure to compare against the BOC cylinder.

Sounds expensive for the deposit, I am £100 for a 30l Argon from Highland Industrial, also remember no VAT on the deposits.

Just looked at sgs site and they only do 10L, 20L and 30L bottles, my guess is they were 20L size.

The price list I have here is 10l bottles are £38 refill and £60 deposit for 5%CO2/Argon

I picked up my first bottle of argon using the BOC deal the other day, and according to my gauge (the one that came with my Jasic TIG machine) it is filled to just over 200 bar (3000 psi). On the label it says that it should be 230 bar. I've only used a tiny bit of it so far.

So,

1. My gauge is wrong (probably, as it looks like a cheap one).
2. BOC haven't filled the bottle to 230 bar.

Which is more likely?

The gas pressure varies depending on the temperature, when it was filled it was probably reading 230bar or over filled slightly as the bottle heats up as its filled, or at least thats how i understand it.

So I have a BOC Volkzone Account and have finished my project and don't plan on doing any welding for a while. My next payment is due end July (Assuming we pay in annually advance).

If I hand in my bottle I assume I won't have the pay the next annual rental?
Is there a charge to keep an account with no bottle?

If I do need more gas to do a small welding project would it be cheaper to get another Y size or select something like Hobby Gas or Adams Gas?

yes there is the charge of yearly rental to pay for

ive kept mine open as saves the hassle to create a new account

ive just paid the yearly rental which i dont mind of 50.00 im now getting sorted out so soon i will be going through 3 bottles or more again

so in the long term keeping the account open was worth it as in first year id clean gone through 3 bottles and once get up and running i will do same or more again

Take the bottle back when you are done and any outstanding rental will be refunded, the renewal will also cancel. If left to near the renewal time and you get the invoice you will be charged the full amount and refunded less a month or two rental, happened to me with my O/A cylinders. No charge to keep the account open.

You only pay rental if you have a cylinder and the account doesn't close if you have no cylinders. For the hobby deals you need to phone and order a cylinder for collection to get the discount, if you just turn up and collect you will pay full price plus all the collection fees and other charges. I've had my account since the 80s and often had no cylinders, but I do find the invoicing dates and charges can be baffling to make sense of!
